Considering it is "sod cemetery" and not "turf cemetery", I am only going to count Belfry games won on grass




1979 at Highlands (Semi-Finals)- Dick Roddy brings Belfry to unprecedented heights by taking his Pirates to Fort Thomas and shocking the Bluebirds 14-8 sending them to their first ever Championship game.

1983 at Williamson, WV- The Pirates do not make the playoffs but beat rival Williamson 12-6 to end the Dick Roddy era.

1984 vs. Cumberland- Haywood's debut. Pirates beat a solid Cumberland team 23-21 to open the season.

1985 at Clay County (Regional Finals)- Back when Clay County was a powerhouse, the Pirates go to manchester and overcome questionable officiating in a 7-6 defensive struggle.

1985 at Newport (Semi-Finals)- On a bitter cold night up near the Ohio River Belfry gives Haywood his first trip to the Finals winning 22-8.

1986 vs. Danville (Semi-Finals)- The infamous torn jersey game. Belfry shocks Danville 21-14 to advance to the State Finals.

1989 vs. Pikeville- The 89 Panthers were loaded and would go on to a State Title. Belfry ended their winning streak and sent a message with a 33-24 victory.

1989 at Ashland (Regional Finals)- Belfry got over the Putnam Stadium jinx and avenged a loss to the Tomcats who had eliminated the Pirates in 1987 and 1988.

1990 vs. Highlands (Pike County Bowl)- A revenge game for Belfry and a statement win by destroying the Bluebirds 38-7. The previous year ended with a heartbreaking OT Loss in the Semi's at the hands of Highlands.

1995 vs. Pikeville- A sore spot to this day for Panthers. Belfry takes advantage of three pass interference calls in the last minute to stun the heavily favored Panthers led by Brett Coleman and Eddie Deramus.

1995 at Bell County- Pirates win 7-0 on a last minute TD pass to shock the Bobcats on Log Mountain and set up a rematch with Tim Couch and the Leslie County Eagles.


1998 vs. Bell County (2nd Round)- Pirates win 14-13 as an extra point flies inches wide.

1999 vs. Ironton, OH- The only win Belfry had against the Tigers and it was a shocker. Ironton went on to be State Runner-Up and had two or three future D1 players.

2001 at Breathitt County (2nd Round)- The Bobcats had Belfry's number until this point. Belfry intercepted Haddix a number of times and made a valiant Second Half comeback led by Daniel Wright to shock the Bobcats.

2003 at Lloyd Memorial (Semi-Finals)- A frozen night with snow that Belfry survived en-route to the First State Title

2004 vs. Prestonsburg (regular season and playoffs)- Two of the most electric and competitive games I have witnessed.

2004 vs. Russell (Semi Finals)- The last game at Vipperman was a Semi-GFinal win against the Josh Gross led Devils.

2010 at Mason County (2nd Round)- Belfry was a heavy, heavy underdog and had a rare 2nd Round road playoff game against a Mason County team that entered ranked #2. The Pirates executed a beautiful game plan to win 27-14.

2011 at Garrard County (Semi-Finals)- Just a great High School game against one of the best Garrard teams of All-Time. Belfry had to come from behind and seal it with a Pick 6 by Gary Runyon.

If we get to include Turf:

2003 vs. Etown (State Finals)- Belfry gets over the hump and win a State Title in a shocking OT game 33-27. Pirates have to come from behind against the Panthers, led by 3 future SEC starters, and cap it off with a David Jones TD on 4th Down.

2004 vs. Owensboro Catholic (State Finals)- Belfry goes back to back and win 28-21 after rushing for over 500 yards behind Howard and Jones.

2005 vs. Pikeville- The first significant win at CAM Stadium.

2007 vs. Breathitt County (Semi-Finals)- Belfry destroys the undefeated Bobcats 62-28 and roll to the State Finals.

2007 vs. Central (State Finals)- The first loss to make the list. This will serve as a monument to the virtues of never underestimating an opponent and also evolve Belfry's viewpoint on playing guys both ways and scheduling.

2008 at Johnson Central- Belfry was a heavy underdog to a great JC team and won in a truly great High School game led by a key 4th Down stop.

2010 vs. Somerset (Semi-Finals)- The overachieving 2010 team nabs another upset, this time undefeated Somerset who was the favorite to win the title. This one is extra special after Tyler Williams passed away too soon.

2013 at Bourbon County (Semi-Finals)- In one of the most hyped matchups I can recall in Belfry history the Pirates went to Paris and defeated the Colonels 21-13 in an electric environment.

2013 vs. Wayne County (Finals)- Belfry gets their third title in a 3-0 game that was decided by an Austin Woolum Field Goal and a key dropped pass in the First Half. Wayne had an unstoppable Offense and Belfry shut them down.

2014 vs. Central (Finals)- Belfry finally beats Central and claims Title #4. Austin Hatfield's legendary career ends on the highest of notes.

2015 vs. Lexington Catholic (Finals)- Three straight for Belfry and in dominating fashion. A Running Clock.

Belfry is one place that a Sod Cemetery would suit the stadium.
