A Trump running mate needs to be willing and able to lie with a straight face because he or she will constantly be asked to comment on what Trump has just said. Hillary would be perfect for the position, but she already has a gig.

Seriously, a VP candidate should share most of the top candidate's vision and principles. Hillary and the media would use Cruz's conservatism to create problems for both Trump and Cruz. Cruz is not going to toss out his principles to be the VP in the administration of a populist or a liberal, nor should he. Trump needs a more malleable VP like Christie or Kasich.

I believe a VP should help to moderate the President. Biden was supposed to take the wild eyed liberal edge off Obama. Lyndon Baines Johnson was supposed to mitigate JFK's inexperience, Paul Ryan was supposed to bring fiscal lucidity to the Romney ticket.

Trump's stated intentions are to return the country to ideals and values of the past. I agree with him on several of his points of view. Take NAFTA for example along with the enhanced threat of TPP. We have come from the glory days of Reagan-Clinton to the days of everything having a stamp on it that says made in China or Mexico and ghost towns on the order of Detroit, Michigan. Again, I was there and I saw it happen. He is right about the trade imbalance and the anorexic state of our military. He is right about border control and the destructive affects of untold millions of illegal aliens. And, he is certainly right about the abject stupidity of political correctness.

I don't quite see how a return to the traditional way of doing things of the past makes Trump a populist. People have tried drinking the liberal monkey puke and guess what? It really does taste like puke. We tried it 'their way' and what looked to be ridiculous ill conceived in theory, turned out to be even worse in practice. Everybody wants to get rid of the insanity now and if that is populism I suppose I am as guilty as the rest.
