Not one single individual who has ranted on Facebook this week or on message boards about confederate flags, mascots and use thereof has any idea what it truly feels like to feel "offended" by those symbols. None of us owned slaves, or were subject to slavery and the atrocity that it was. None of us had our homes raided by Union soldiers and told that the village where you lived is now under Union control and you cannot be a Confederate sympathizer any longer and that your reasoning for wanting independence is wrong.

"But I have ancestors who (owned or were) slaves"...Stop it. You can't remember your lineage past your grandma.

None of us truly understand what it must have been like to be "offended" either by Union/Confederate influences - so why do we act like we do? Because the media tells you to? Because a politician uses a tragic act of violence on a black church for political gain?

Since none of us lived during that time to truly view those symbols as offensive, shouldn't we just call those flags and such what they truly are? HISTORY.

It's in the past...Let's leave it there and move on. Stop acting like it still offends you and attacking others who recognize history, both the good and bad.
