why is it set up so that someone not in prision, that doesn't have a lot of money has to wonder where their next meal is coming from, but if they comitt a crime they get a roof over there head, a bed to sleep in, electricity, tv, and three hot meals a day?

I agree that many feel this way about prison. There are government programs available for those individuals that are on the streets that are not available to the inmate population. One example is college grants. Inmates in my state must pay for the college classes that they receive. A person on the street would be able to get financial help. Yes they do get a roof over their head but in most cases it is in a very small cell with someone that you don’t like and have to live with. They pay for their own TV and the cable bill is also paid by the inmates with the profit from the commissary. The prison that I work in doesn’t provide AC for the inmate housing units; therefore, we can save some on the power bill. We have to have the power to run the place as safe as possible so we can continue to protect the public. Yes they are fed well, but they have very little choice in the food. They receive 3 meals a day during the week and two meals a day on the weekend and holidays. It is a larger meal like brunch for the morning meal on the weekend. That also is used to save money.
