Football has the least amount of game action as any sport.
Only 10 regular season games. I have no problem with bad teams making the playoffs, and I guarantee you the kids blowing them love those games.
So with that said, what is the best route? what is your opinion?
If you shorten the playoffs by only taking the top 2 teams of each district, it takes off a week of playoff action. Do you go ahead and make the regular season 1 more game or do you simply cancel 1 week of football each year for a sport that only gets 10 games anyways?
There is nothing we as fans can do to increase the competition in certain schools. Phelps will probably never have another winning season in its history. Sad, but true probability. However there is no reason whatsoever that they make the playoffs with a 0-9-1 record. There is no benefit for them to travel to Raceland, and get beat 66-0. There is no benefit for Raceland. There is no benefit for the Pike County Board of Education, especially when they averagely have to do the same for East Ridge, Phelps, Shelby Valley (excluding this year), and Pike Central (for the early years). Personally, I like the old 4 class system. You had much more competition in the earlier rounds of the playoffs instead of Mayfield winning the first 4 games by 30+. Yeah, they may beat the 4 seed, but you cant change that unless you only take the 1-2 seeds out of every district.
Quote:I reference back to 2006, 1A-4-7/8:
7-1 (9-5) Somerset 41
7-4 (7-4) Cumberland 14
7-2 (8-4) Harlan 42
7-3 (7-4) Williamsburg 36
8-1 (8-4) Pikeville 44
8-4 (4-7) Jenkins 0
8-2 (9-4) Hazard 27
8-3 (5-6) Paintsville 21 OT
Schools not making the playoffs;
District 7:
Evarts, 2-8; Pineville, 3-7; Lynn Camp, 3-7.
District 8:
Phelps, 2-8; South Floyd, 3-7; Allen Central 3-7.
Now, yeah the Somerset and Pikeville games are going to happen unless you play 1-2 seed playoff games. But the other games were quite competitive.
Quote:Lets look at how that region took shape this year:
7-1 (11-3) Hazard 69
8-4 (0-9-1) Phelps 0
8-2 (5-6) South Floyd 32
7-3 (7-5) Fairview 48
7-2 (10-3) Paintsville 41
8-3 (3-8) Allen Central 8
8-1 (11-1) Pikeville 51
7-4 (2-9) Nicholas County 0
Schools not making the playoffs:
District 7:
None
District 8:
None
There was one close game (that probably shouldn't have) in that stretch of the playoffs. With that in front of my face I can't see it beneficial to anybody. It's always nice to have an extra week of football practice, but what good does it do for a school to go get their brains beat out and spend district money?
