A miner was killed in a roof collapse accident at a mine in Perry County on Thursday morning, state officials said.

State mining officials were notified at about 8:55 a.m. Thursday of a roof collapse at the Perry County Coal Corp. HZ4-1 mine, said Chuck Wolfe, a spokesman for the state's Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet.

Officials did not release the victim's name.

A roof collapse in Pike County killed Cornelius Yates, 44, of Shelbiana last month. That accident occurred inside the Maverick Mining Co. LLC mine in Pikeville. Kentucky led the nation last year in the number of mine deaths with eight people killed on the job, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration.
