Strickland joins USF staff as assistant coach

Rod Strickland is following former Kentucky assistant coach Orlando Antigua to South Florida.

Strickland will join Antigua’s staff as an assistant coach after serving the last four seasons at UK as a special assistant to John Calipari. Anitgua was named head coach at USF two weeks ago.

“I’m so happy for Rod and his family,” Coach Cal said. “I’m sad we’re losing him but happy that he’s going to work again with Orlando, who he also coached the Dominican Republic National Team with. It’s a great opportunity for Rod, one I’m confident he will do well with, but it’s also a great thing for Orlando to have Rod, his experience and his knowledge at his side.”

Strickland previously served as a UK assistant coach during the 2009-10 season before transitioning to special assistant to the head coach.

The longtime NBA veteran first joined Calipari’s staff at Memphis, serving as the director of student-athlete development manager from 2006 to 2008, when he was then named director of basketball operations for the Tigers.

Strickland, a two-time All-American at DePaul, played in 1,094 games in the NBA and scored more than 14,000 points (13.2 career average) and dished out nearly 8,000 assists (7.3 career average).

In September of 2008, Strickland was inducted into the New City Basketball Hall of Fame. During the summer of 2013, Strickland earned a degree from Northeastern Illinois in sports leadership.
