Bowling Green @ Graves County
#31
adopted purple Wrote:Can anyone tell me about Graves County's field? They beat a Warren Central team that scored 69 points on Highlands and were playing very good football. I was told the field had a lot to do with the game. Central folks said it was like a plowed field. Their QB was hurt for the 2nd year in a row. What's the story? I'm not too worried because both teams have to play on the same field, but it could slow us down a little. Luckily, our team is very balanced and should be able to adjust. They certainly got our attention after last weeks game. Most thought Central would roll, but Graves is no cupcake, no matter what computer says they are. They are playing for their 1st regional title in school history and they should be very proud. They are a dangerous team that we will not overlook. I will amend my 1st prediction and say Bowling Green 35-10.

As mentioned in my previous post, I personally didn't see their field as a problem, but I wasn't playing on it. Looked fine from my vantage point and fine when I walked across it.

As for Chris's injury, that was a fluke. Definitely nothing to do with the field. I just joke that the place has it in for him, since he got a foot injury this time and a broken arm last year.

It should speak volumes to everyone though that Central managed to stay in that game (never trailing in regulation) and lose by just 1 despite playing a backup QB in all but the first series - a guy that pretty much never saw the field all year unless the game was waaaaay over. Central apparently intended to run a lot of their option attack, and gained 40 yards on the first play from scrimmage running that, a QB run where Chris got injured. After he gutted out 5 more plays and they turned it over on downs, he was out, and they had to revert to the base Wing-T package for the backup. After halftime the Graves County coaches figured out how to shut the Dragons down entirely from that set, and they did absolutely nothing offensively until their last possession where they gained two first downs. Even in the OTs they gained very little, scoring on one play from 5 yards after gaining 5 yards on the first three downs and another from 10 yards after gaining nothing on the first two downs. Losing their QB had everything to do with the result, not the field. Their lack of depth finally came back to haunt them (thank you Warren County Public Schools).

Finally, as to this game, Graves County can at least present some problems for Bowling Green as compared to what Central would have brought. They have a better passing game and run the spread behind a good sized offensive line. Against Central, BG would have been able to stack the box as usual, and get pressure on the QB immediately. That may not come as easily here. I expect Graves to get at least two scores. But offensively I think Bowling Green will annihilate them. Graves simply won't be able to score enough.
