1. Simon Kenton (9-4): The Pioneers improved by seven wins and split with Campbell County, getting the upper hand in a second-round playoff rematch. They could go farther than the state quarterfinals this season.

2. Campbell County (7-5): Coach Stephen Lickert's first season was a success as the Camels enjoyed a three-win improvement over the previous year. A new quarterback will be directing a potentially explosive offense.

3. Dixie Heights (3-8): The Colonels are a tough matchup for Simon Kenton, beating the Pioneers for the second year in a row last season under first-year coach Dave Brossart, who also got a district win against Ryle. "We return eight or nine starters on both sides of the ball," the coach said.

4. Ryle (3-8): The Raiders had a tough 2012, getting a lone district win against Boone County. A new quarterback will guide the offense with plenty of talented skill players as weapons.

5. Boone County (1-10): The Rebels hit a low point and changed head coaches. The new coach is Jeff Griffith, a former Bowling Green defensive coordinator. "Skill positions on both sdies of the ball will be the strenght of the team," he said. "Depth is a concern in the lines."

PRESEASON FAVORITE - SIMON KENTON

The Pioneers revved up their offense, averaging almost 25 points per game, representing an improvement of more than two touchdowns. The playmaking bend-but-don't-break defense and an exciting special teams helped the offense start possessions with good field position. That should remain a constant. Our strengths will be that we return nine starters on defense and seven starters on offense. We have a veteran football team," coach Jeff Marksberry said.

TOP CHALLENGER - CAMPBELL COUNTY

The Camels expect to replace rugged quarterback Tyler Durham with senior Avery Wood, who played wide receiver last season. But don't expect Wood to run for 1,800 yards as Durham did his senior year. Durham also threw for over 1,300 yards and had a hand in 37 touchdowns, 25 rushing. Those are big shoes. Wood completed one pass last season, but coach Lickert is confident in his offense, thanks to a quality group of receivers and an experienced tailback.

2013 PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Brenan Kuntz, Simon Kenton, Sr., QB, 6-3, 205. There are several top-flight receivers deserving of this choice, especially Campbell County's Jake Zabonick. There's also Simon Kenton's Grant Wassom and Dixie Heights multi-purpose back Seth Capel, but Kuntz is expected to be the big difference maker while directing the Pioneers' offense. Kuntz, who completed 57 percent of his passes for 2,098 yards and 19 TDs, and Wassom, who caught 50 passes for 800 yards, make each other better. The speedy Zabonick (28 catches, 731 yards) remains the district's most explosive playmaker.
