#1
Courier-Journal: Hawkins Gatorade POY

Madison Central point guard Dominique Hawkins was named the Gatorade Kentucky Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year on Thursday.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior averaged 20.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game. He shot 50 percent from the field, 35 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line. He was named Most Valuable Player of the Boys’ Sweet 16.

Hawkins remains undecided on a college. Western Kentucky, South Carolina, Morehead State, Tennessee Tech and Valparaiso are schools that have made offers.

Hawkins is one of five finalist for Kentucky Mr. Basketball. Bullitt East’s Derek Willis (UK) and Rusty Troutman (Bellarmine), Montgomery County’s Omar Prewitt (William & Mary) and Trinity’s Darryl Hicks (undecided) are the other finalists.

By winning the state award, Hawkins is also eligible to win the Gatorade National Player of the Year.
