John Calipari on gun control, mental health issues
#1
In light of the tragic mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school last week that left 26 dead – including 20 young children – many across the country are offering up opinions on how we prevent this all-too-common occurrence in America. Several sports figures, especially coaches, have spoken out recently. At the end of UK coach John Calipari’s press conference today to preview the Cats’ game against Marshall tomorrow, he was asked if he had any thoughts on gun control, etc. Here’s a transcript of his response (or watch the video starting at the 10:29 mark):

“Well, I don’t see the need for assault weapons. I don’t see the need at all. But, again, we as a country gotta come together and say, ‘You have some mental illness issues. How do we deal with those?’ How do we truly deal with someone that has an illness and not shove it under the rug that it’s an embarrassing thing. Well, is cancer embarrassing? Mental illness, it’s an illness. We don’t need assault rifles. It’s a problem. Maybe it’s video games. I don’t know. It needs to be a dialogue of: How do we come to grips with this?
