I can relate....my family and wife's family is so dispersed and dysfunctional that holidays are a nightmare trying to coordinate everything and having to deal with family members you would rather not see...

With that being said as far as gifts, we buy for our children and parents. The kids then draw names to buy for each other. A time is set for when Christmas is celebrated and if you can make it then great, if not, then maybe next year.
