This is for my nephew who plays for Lawrence County




Why Do I Wear This Number?


I wear this jersey with this number 11
on my chest with pride.


You ask why of all numbers to choose from
on this one did i decide?


It came about not by chance or
a random jersey that was provided.


The choice came from emotion
I thought long ago had subsided.


It came from a special childhood friend
who I played alongside.


We laughed and played one on one
her never backing down or stepping aside.


Our telling secrets and easy companionship,
which in no one else we could confide.


She was a true warrior in every sense,
when they said she was too small she just laughed and took it in stride.


We had a special bond, with common goals,
the future looked bright til fate stepped inside.


My friend was taken for what reason only God can answer,
for the first time in my life I allowed myself to cry.


So as I wear her number I can feel her presence,
pushing me to be the best, to try my best,
to play the best and never let what you want be denied.


I know shes standing up there looking down with her shoes still untied,
her ponytail crooked,dribbling her basketball,
angel wings sparkling telling me to keep it up shes enjoying the ride.
