Mercy 2 Greenwood 1 (10 innings) (KHSAA State Tournament)
#2
OWENSBORO, Ky. – Jordan Vorbrink’s single to left-center field scored Morgan Meyer in the bottom of the 10th inning and gave the Mercy Academy softball team a 2-1 victory over Greenwood on Friday in the Rawlings/KHSAA State Tournament at Jack C. Fisher Park.

“It was a great game,” Mercy coach Josh Bloomer said. “It’s a shame somebody has to get in the losers’ bracket. Some people might say that’s the best two teams here, but I don’t know.”

Mercy (34-8), ranked No. 4 in the state, advanced to face No. 17 Lone Oak (37-4) at 4 p.m. EDT in a winners’ bracket semifinal. Boyle County (32-11) and Ryle (23-13) – both unranked – are scheduled to meet in the other winners’ bracket semifinal.

No. 3 Greenwood (37-6) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Raley Slone singled and later scored on an error.

Down to its final out, Mercy tied the score in the bottom of the seventh when Lauren Springhetti singled home Erika Downey.
“Once we tied it, I just felt like all momentum was ours,” Bloomer said.

Greenwood loaded the bases with two out in the top of the 10th and Angela Adkins sent a drive into the left-center gap, where Mercy’s Aubrey Meiners made a diving catch to end the inning.

Meyer led off the bottom of the 10th with a bunt single – her fourth hit of the game – and moved to second on Morgan Ellington’s infield hit, setting up Vorbrink’s game-winner.

Mercy freshman Leigh Ellen Thomas (7-0) entered in the third inning and pitched eight innings of scoreless relief, allowing four hits and three walks and striking out four.
