Meade Co. 1 - Calloway Co 0 (State Tournament)
#1
Meade County’s Bo Wilson and Calloway County’s Dylan Dwyer hooked up in a classic pitchers’ duel in the state baseball tournament at Whitaker Bank Ballpark on Tuesday afternoon.
Meade County wound up winning 1-0 when Andrew Zabel scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Wilson, a senior right-hander who’s headed to the Air Force Academy, went the distance. He gave up two hits, struck out six and walked one in improving his record to 10-2.
Dwyer, a senior left-hander who’s signed with Kentucky, also went seven innings. He gave up two hits, struck out 13 and walked seven. The loss was his first in 12 decisions this season.
Zabel led off the seventh with a single to center off Dwyer. After he was sacrificed to second, Wilson was intentionally walked. Dwyer struck out the next batter for the second out. But with Brady Smith at the plate, Dwyer threw a wild pitch that allowed Zabel to get to second. Dwyer then threw another breaking ball into the dirt, and it bounced away from catcher Caleb Brannon, and Zabel scored easily.
“We knew it’d be a low-scoring game, so we thought if we could just scratch out one run at some point, we’d get it done,” Wilson said. ” But at end of the day, we just had more than they did.”
This was the first time Calloway County was shut out this season.
