Okay, I have read this thread and pondered the various points made. I agree that leadership must come from the top. In this instance, the Super needs to consider all the angles.
The Brown gentleman was an excellant coach. He did as much as he could do, considering what he had to work with. (i.e. school support, student interest, player interest/participation, parental support). His departure was disappointing and ill-timed, but hardly the place to lay the blame.(I would hazard a guess that my first impression of where the blame should be placed on this one is the reason he left in the first place... but I'm will to explore the issue)
The school was left in a lurch to find someone to "take the program" and that's exactly what they did. They found someone to "take" the program because they had to. Now, did anyone think the kids would "buy in" to this person? It would have depended upon that person's football pedigree, and since he didn't come from a football background, there may have been some misgivings among the diehards. Granted, I am sure that those kids, who were diehards and would have played for Foghorn Leghorn should he be hired to coach, were always gonna be there & ready to strap on pads and line 'em up. (I'm sure this number was low, but hey, if there was 11 guys out, there you go)
I'm surprised they even won one game, but this shows there's a glimmer somewhere in that school for football. Therefore, the school should have been trying to make plans to help that program in any way they could. The current coach may not be what they need or even who they want, but considering he probably had an idea of what he was getting into and did it anyway, gives him at least the right to decide his own fate and/or help in the construction of this program.
I would wager he might be willing and possibly helpful in creating a POA with the Administration for success. I bet they could make a call to Morgan County and ask for some helpful insights. Keeping in mind, Morgan had once been a football power with a frame of reference (in dozens of men who played for Morgan with sons coming along to play Moragn football) & understanding Magoffin's program is a comparatively new one, in that it's been there for less than 20 years.
Magoffin's plan probably won't be all that helpful to the current high school players, but then getting them to understand that showing up, doing their best, and helping to build a program is something they can take extreme pride in being a part of for their school and community.
Elementary is where this program/school system needs to look. Phillip Haywood began building P-burg's football program in the elementary school, while he was the high school head football coach. He created a great team from the ground up. As he moved on to Belfry, a couple of new coaches have come in and enjoyed success based upon a firm foundation. Magoffin must look to help itself. Supporting its program and its student athletes from grade school up. Purchasing safe and good equipment, hiring knowledgeable and trained coaches. (hiring folks willing to get the training they need if they need it) Working together to be a success. They know how to do this, look @ their basketball programs. They just need to do it. If they aren't willing to make this effort, then my suggestion would be to eliminate the program all together instead of wasting time, lives, dreams, and money.
Sorry it took so long to get to the crux of this question, but it's not an easy process for me. The school, school council, and its administration is solely to blame for where their football program currently finds itself. If they have a new Principal, then perhaps there's hope.
