RACELAND â Thirty years after Bob Trimble was a starting guard for Raceland, the Rams are experiencing a changing of the guard.
Trimble resigned as Racelandâs girls basketball coach and took the position as the boysâ head coach on Tuesday, according to Bill Farley, the schoolâs athletic director.
The girlsâ head coaching position is officially open.
Trimbleâs transition is bittersweet, he said, after seven seasons of directing the Lady Rams â he was 124-81 overall with two 63rd District titles, two 16th Region All âAâ championships and guided the Lady Rams to five regional tournament appearances.
âI made some great relationships with coaches and players,â Trimble said. âItâs tough to leave them, but Iâm excited about the new challenge. When I came back to Raceland (as a boys assistant to Shawn Johnson) in 1993, this was the job I always wanted. Who knew it would be 20 years later?â
The 47-year-old did not apply when Scott Floyd took the head boysâ position in 2007 because he had just been with the girlsâ team for two seasons and didnât feel the timing was right. Upon Floydâs recent resignation, Trimble still needed some time to mull it over.
âI thought about it long and hard before I decided to throw my name in the hat,â he said, adding that he is thankful to all the former girlsâ players and coaches with whom heâs worked.
Trimble was a three-year starter for Raceland from 1980-82. His senior season, played under head coach Danny Evans, was the first winning season for the Rams in 20 years. They won 16 games.
âThatâs when things really started to get going basketball-wise,â Trimble said.
Raceland hasnât enjoyed a winning season since 2007-08.
âOne thing I want to do is get the community behind the program,â Trimble said. âI want to really get things going in that regard. I think I can do that, and bring some excitement.
âIâve been a Ram my whole life,â he added. âNow Iâm going to be the head coach in the town I grew up playing in. Itâs always been kind of a dream job.â
--Personally I think this is a great hire. Being a former Ram basketball player from way back in the day, it had been a bit disappointing following the basketball program the last few years since Coach Johnson resigned. I know Bob and he has the orange and black pumping through his veins and will do a heck of job--
