NEW CASTLE, KY. — Collins moved into the Boys’ Eighth Region Tournament final by hitting nine of 10 free throws in the final 1:06 of play to beat Gallatin County 56-47 Monday night at Henry County High School’s gym.
Collins (24-10) jumped out to a 17-1 lead when Gallatin County missed all 10 of its field-goal attempts in the first quarter and didn’t make one until its 13th try, a shot by Zach Brown with 6:17 left in the second period.
Gallatin County (22-9), with Kristian Morgan and Travis Davis each scoring 18 points, still got within three points at 41-38 and 47-44. Then Collins’ Michael Brooks hit one of two foul shots at the 1:06 mark. Gallatin County missed several shots and Collins sank eight foul shots in a row—four by Dez Marshall and four by Buddy Johnson.
Brian Stone, Collins’ 6-foot-8 center, scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Titans. With his team leading 41-38, Stone scored two quick baskets and Brooks made another one to push Collins’ lead to 47-38 before Gallatin County rallied again.
Morgan hit 6 of 15 shots, including three three-pointers. Davis made 6 of 15 shots, three of them threes. Overall, Gallatin County took 25 threes and made eight.
