Eight years since its only trip to the Sweet 16, the Trinity High School basketball team is going back with one goal in mind — a state championship.
The Shamrocks put on a sharp display of athleticism (see Darryl Hicks’ thunderous second-quarter dunk) and teamwork (four players scored in double figures) to dispatch rival St. Xavier 67-46 in Monday’s final of the Class Act Seventh Region Tournament at Bellarmine University’s Knights Hall.
The Shamrocks (31-3) will take their No. 1 spot in The Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings to Rupp Arena next week for the PNC/KHSAA Sweet 16. Trinity will face the Sixth Region winner (No. 2 Pleasure Ridge Park or No. 5 Bullitt East) in a first-round game at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14.
“We have a lot of big goals here, and we’re not finished yet,” senior Nathan Dieudonne said after the first-ever Trinity-St. X regional final. “We’re just getting started.”
James Quick had 15 points and added 11 rebounds to lead four Trinity starters in double figures, joining Darryl Hicks (12 points), Troy Saxton (12 points) and Charles Foster (11 points). Dieudonne added seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
“We’re just pumped,” Trinity coach Mike Szabo said. “This has been our mission this season. We talked about it from Day One. These guys have worked so hard and really paid a price. The bottom line is they’ve earned it.”
Brock Kiesler had 13 points to lead St. X (23-9), which was playing in a regional final for the first time since 1998.
“We’ve come a long way, but we haven’t gotten to where we want to be,” Tigers coach Kevin Klein said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the 15 guys in uniform tonight. … A lot of underclassmen are going to be hungry in the offseason. There’s a lot to build for in the future.”
Christian Hardy’s basket pulled St. X within 15-14 early in the second quarter before Trinity took control.
Quick and Foster hit consecutive 3-pointers before Hicks drove the lane for a powerful two-handed dunk that made it 23-14 with 5:49 left and had the Trinity student section in a frenzy.
