Collins 69 - South Oldham 63 (8th Region Tournament)
#3
NEW CASTLE - Brian Stone's perfect night from the field propelled the Collins boys' basketball team to a 69-63 victory over South Oldham in the first round of the 8th Region Tournament on Wednesday night.

Stone, the Titans' 6-foot-8 senior center, went 12-for-12 from the field on his way to a game-high 24 points as Collins avenged an earlier loss to the Dragons at Henry County. Stone, who committed to Malone (Ohio) University earlier this week, also grabbed game-high 13 points and blocked four shots.

The Titans (23-10) will play Gallatin County (22-8), which rallied for a 56-55 victory over Simon Kenton on Wednesday night, at 6 p.m. Monday night in the 8th Region semifinals. Collins beat the Wildcats 61-58 back on Nov. 29 in the season-opener for both teams.

The 8th Region championship game will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

Stone didn't do it alone, though. Three other players scored in double figures to help Collins to its sixth straight victory. Junior Dez Marshall scored 17 points and classmates Buddy Johnson and Terez Smith added 13 and 11 points apiece, respectively, for the Titans, who shot 59.1 percent (26 for 44) from the field. Smith also grabbed five rebounds off the bench for Collins, which outrebounded South Oldham 39-20.

The Titans also got some big minutes off the bench from eighth-grade point guard Malik Manica. He had three points, two rebounds and two assists in 10 minutes. With Manica running the team for most of the fourth quarter Collins rallied from a one-point deficit and outscored the Dragons 21-14 over the last 8 minutes to avenge its 77-62 loss at South Oldham back on Dec. 15.
