MOUNT VERNON — The Casey County girls won their first district championship in three years Thursday night, coming from behind to defeat Pulaski County 57-46 in the girls 47th District Tournament final at Rockcastle County.
Jasmine Johnson had 22 points and 11 rebounds for Casey (17-14), which trailed 27-21 at halftime but opened the second half with an 11-3 run to take a 32-30 lead.
The lead changed hands twice more after that — and seven times in all — and the Rebels went in front to stay with an 8-0 run that included six points by Johnson and a layup by Tiara Cochran that gave them a 40-36 lead with 1 minute, 38 seconds left in the third quarter.
After Emily Forbes hit a 3-point shot for Pulaski (21-11), Casey scored another seven straight to take a 47-39 with 5:19 remaining. The Rebels then began taking time off the clock, and they hit eight of 14 free throws in the final 4 minutes.
Casey's defense forced Pulaski into 25 turnovers, including 14 in the second half, as the Rebels beat the Maroons for the third time this season.
Lakken Miller scored 12 points and Sarah Beard had 10 for Casey, which was the top seed in the district but had lost eight of 11 games since star center Megan Pittman suffered a torn knee ligament in a Jan. 17 win at Pulaski.
Pittman had a successful surgery to repair her knee earlier Thursday, and she sent word to her teammates after the game that she would try to greet them at the school when they returned to Liberty.
Brittany Warren led Pulaski with 20 points, but she had only one point in the final 12 minutes.
This is Casey's second district title in seven years in its current district.
