Campbell County is tied for the lead in the team standings after one day of the Kentucky state wrestling tournament.
The Camels and Union County each have 71.5 points. Teams completed two rounds in the championship and consolation brackets Friday. Campbell has 11 wrestlers still alive in the tournament, six in the running for a state title. Simon Kenton is fourth at 59.5 and has 10 wrestlers still in it, five in the championship quarterfinals. Ryle has 50 points and has eight still going, four in the quarters.
The race for the team title was expected to be close, and it could stay that way until the end. Non-local contenders Union, Trinity, St. Xavier, Johnson Central and Larue County all have plenty of wrestlers still going Saturday.
Twenty-three local wrestlers are still alive for an individual state title. Here’s how Region 6 fared in each weight class. I stayed home to cover hoops Friday but I’ll be there Saturday to cover the meet and keep you posted on any goings-on. Action picks up 9:30 Saturday with the championship quarterfinals, then goes to the third round of consolation. Wrestlers in that round have to win two matches to earn a top-eight medal.
