He played at Morehead State. He was an assistant coach at both Olivet-Nazarene University and Young Harris College (GA) before serving as an associate scout with the Florida Marlins. While at Olivet-Nazarene, Gassman helped the Tigers to back-to-back NAIA World Series appearances and two CCAC Conference Titles. During his time with Young Harris, the Mountain Lions went 51-11, were Regional Champions and Runner-Up District Champions. They were also ranked as high as #2 in the NJCCA polls.
