No. 1 Trinity Advances to Republic Bank Classic Semifinals
Shamrocks to Face Bardstown on Thursday at 8pm at Lexington Catholic
LEXINGTON, Ky. – No. 1 Trinity led by as many as 22 in the third quarter and coasted to a 60-47 win over previously unbeaten Lakota West (OH) in the quarterfinals of the Republic Bank Holiday Classic.
Junior guard Darryl Hicks had a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds in 26 minutes for the Shamrocks. Senior Nathan Dieudonne added 14 points.
Trinity advanced to the semifinals of the Republic Bank Holiday Classic for the fourth time in seven tournament appearances. The Shamrocks are 2-1 all-time in semifinals games in the event. Trinity is a two-time champion of the event, hosted by Lexington Catholic High School, winning titles in 2004 and 2009.
The Shamrocks used a pair of 7-0 runs in the first half to take control and lead by as many as 15 in the half at 24-9 and 26-11. Trinity ended the first quarter on 7-0 run after the Firebirds took the lead on a basket by Ali Barnes with 3:53 left in the first quarter at 4-3. Hicks had five of seven points during another 7-0 run early in the second quarter to extend the lead to 17-6.
Trinity’s suffocating defense held the Firebirds to just 15.4% shooting in the first half at 4-of-26, including 0-of-8 from behind the three-point arc. The Shamrocks limited the Firebirds opportunities, but were unable to force turnovers, scoring just six points off eight turnovers in the first half.
Scoring picked up in the third quarter when the teams exchanged 7-0 runs early in the quarter and Trinity extended their 15-point lead to 16 at 46-30 by the end of the third quarter.
With the win, Trinity took over sole possession of second place on the all-time wins list in the Republic Bank Holiday Classic. Trinity has compiled 17 wins in the tournament round of the event in its seven appearances. Lexington Catholic owns 44 tournament round wins in the 16-year history of the event. Overall, Trinity is 23-6 in the event overall, including a 17-5 mark in the tournament rounds.
Trinity continues play in the Republic Bank Holiday Classic on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. when the Shamrocks face Bardstown in the tournament semifinals. Trinity and Bardstown have not met since the 1991-1992 season when Trinity posted a 75-68 win over the Tigers.
