Should the players get to pick--absolutely not.
Should they have a voice in the process--YES.
14-18 year olds (usually) are not at the level where they can objectively make decisions (some are--but most are not). They should have a voice in the process.
I could see where the team would be upset after rallying around a person who stepped in during a bad situation--and did well. But the adminstration has a responsibility to see the long term future.
Why don't you speak to the principal or write a professional letter explaining the strength's/weaknesses of the current coach--and why you think he should be retained.
