Only difference is that now things get publicized in bigger than life proportions. To make this out like molestation just started is naive. I applaud those brave souls who are now able to come forward and make this stuff public. I'd actually think that these public incidents will have a positive affect on prevention in the future. But, the past has been just as bad, and possibly worse that what it is today. Up until the "priest" molestation incidents were publicly exposed, everyone thought "this could never happen". Then we found out that it happened all the time.
