NKU welcomes back three letterwinners in guards Tony Rack (5.5 points per game), Jon Van Hoose (5.7 points per game) and Ethan Faulkner (4.3 points per game). Rack and Van Hoose, a pair of seniors, are 3-point shooting specialists who will be expected to provide much of the outside shooting in 2011-12. Faulkner will challenge for the starting point guard duties after finishing third on the team with 51 assists last season.
A talented group of 10 newcomers includes four transfers who could play key roles. Eshaunte Jones, a 6-4 junior forward who played two years at Nebraska, could make an immediate impact for the Norse. Jones averaged 4.1 points per game at Nebraska last season as the Cornhuskers posted a 19-13 record. He played in 28 games and averaged 12.4 minutes per contest in 2010-11.
Jones was 27-for-80 (.338) from 3-point range last season and also averaged 1.4 rebounds per game. Two years ago as a freshman, he averaged 6.0 points per game, including a career-high 21 against Brigham Young.
Ernest “Stretch” Watson, a 6-7 junior forward from Trinity Valley Community College, could also emerge as an impact player for NKU. Two years ago, Watson averaged 10.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game as Trinity Valley finished with a 24-9 record. A native of Hyattsville, Md., Watson once scored 50 points in a game for Progressive Christian Academy.
Shot-blocking specialist DeAndre Nealy transferred to NKU from Kent State during the summer and could be a key in the lane. Nealy, who averaged 7.6 blocked shots per game at Mott (Mich.) Community College three years ago, is a 6-6 post player. During the 2008-09 season at Mott, Nealy averaged 15.2 points and 8.1 rebounds, and he led all levels of college basketball with 7.6 blocks per game. Nealy capped off his sophomore season at Mott by earning NJCAA All-America honors.
As a freshman, Nealy led Mott to the NJCAA Division II national championship by averaging 12.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.1 blocks per game.
