Louis Meadows NOTES: I saw Perry Central play at the Transylvania team camp this past summer. At that time, they had a new transfer from Mason County. The team looked pretty good, so I recently wrote Randy and asked him for some comments on the team and the transfer.

Turns out he has had am second transfer of the summer right before school started, this one from North Laurel.

If you remember, Kendall Noble transferred from Breathitt County to Perry Central two summers ago as a junior. At the time, Kendall was rated the top member of the Class of 2012 in the state of Kentucky in all the coaches’ polls. Kendall led Perry Central to a 27-3 regular season record last year and the Region 14 title.

But last year in the first round of the Sweet Sixteen a game against Region 6 champs Louisville Butler, Kendall went down with a torn ACL early in the first quarter. Louisville Butler won the game by two points.

All of this is a set-up for the following, Randy’s answer to my inquiry about his team I saw play at Transy. Here it is in Randy’s own words.

Just wanted to give you an update on a couple of things. Katelyn Smith, the girl you mentioned from Mason County, is even better than I thought. She may be D-1 level by years end. She actually is from Perry County. Her Dad played for us when I was at MC Napier and was a good player. He is our technology coordinator for the school system. Her Mom and Dad divorced about 5 years ago and she moved to Mason County with her Mom. Her Mom inherited a house just recently back here in the area and got a teaching job in Knott County so Katelyn ended up coming home. She is thrilled and her dad is overjoyed having her back close to him. She is about 5’10 and is very strong and quick.

We also had another transfer late in the summer right before school started. Tamera Crawford, who played at North Laurel the last two years, is now at Perry Central. Her parents just went through a divorce and the dad has relatives in Perry County. So she and her dad relocated here. Tamera is a great shooter and can play point or two guard and is a very talented player as well. I have had several colleges inquire about her. I am really blessed having these kids come on board.

Kendall is really making great progress in her comeback. The physical therapist says she is very close to being released. Her strength level is great, she is now making full speed cuts and just this week has starting jumping and landing on the so called “bad leg”. She has really worked hard, not just on the knee, but on upper body strength and shooting. She has shot more than she ever has because she has not been able to play AAU or run so she has really worked on her shooting. Knowing her she will be back stronger and better than before.

I’m really excited about my team with the new additions and Kendall coming back strong and with the returning players. I think we can be as good as anybody in the state. I’m looking forward to getting started.

MORE LRM NOTES: Don’t bet against Randy. He coached M. C. Napier to the State Title in 1994, before they consolidated into Perry Central. Last season, Perry Central used the phrase “Double K” offense led by Kendall Noble and freshman center Kayla Rankin (freshman last year). This year, I guess it is going to be the “Triple K“ offense with the addition of Katelyn Smith to the team. Don’t know how they are going to get the name Tammy Crawford into the “Triple K” deal.
