Mercy Academy, ranked second in The Courier-Journal's girls' high school basketball Litkenhous Ratings, whalloped visiting and No. 11-ranked Scott County 79-53 Tuesday night.

The Jaguars (19-5) led 38-28 at halftime, then took firm control in the third quarter, expanding their lead to 62-41.

Assistant coach Keith Baisch said the key for Mercy was taking better care of the basketball and forcing turnovers in the second half. The Cardinals (13-8) had 37 turnovers for the contest, 14 in the second half, while Mercy had just eight of its 25 turnovers after halftime.

"In the second half, when we created a turnover, we took better care of the basketball," Baisch said.

Juliann Miller led Mercy with 23 points, hitting 10 of 15 shots. Whitney Hartlage added 13 points; Lauren Faris 11 points, seven steals and five assists; and Courtney Roush 11 points.

Alex McKenzie had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Scott County, which outrebounded the Jaguars 43-37.
