If we're buying from that region we have a vested interest in the security of the region thus we will need to have a presents there. Getting off as much middle eastern oil as we can will add to the safety of our service personnel. If we stop gulf oil production and exploration we will increase our need for more security in the middle east.

The less of our own oil we tap, the more dependent we will be on Middle Eastern oil, and the more important the security of the Middle East oil fields will become.
