Covington Holmes High School standout senior Elijah Pittman has signed with Chipola College - a two-year junior college in Mariana (Fla.).
Chipola coach Jake Headrick said the 6-foot-7 Pittman can "be special," for the program that has produced two of the past three junior college Players of the Year.
"We found out about him early, saw him and right away could see the talent," Headrick said. "If he can take care of his academics, he could play anywhere in the country in two years.
"He's a kid that is going to be a special player. He has a lot of talent and potential."
Pittman has been considered one of the state's best athletes since he broke onto the scene as a sophomore during the Sweet 16. After playing much of that season on the junior-varsity team, Pittman averaged 15.4 points during the Sweet 16 run that ended with a loss to Mason County in the title game of that season.
As a junior, Pittman averaged 14.2 points and 6.5 rebounds and then during his senior year averaged 15.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.1 blocked shots, 1.7 assists and 1.5 steals.
Pittman finished his career with more than 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
Chipola has sent 44 of 46 players into the Division I ranks the past six years.

I think this will be a very good fit for Elijah.
Chipola has produced 2 of the past 3 JUCO Player of the Year and also sent 44 of 46 players to the D1 ranks over the past 6 years.
A few comments that stood out to me in the above story:
Headrick said. "If he can take care of his academics, he could play anywhere in the country in two years.
"He's a kid that is going to be a special player. He has a lot of talent and potential."
Congrats Elijah! Hope to see you in the D1 ranks in two years!

Congrats to Elijah. This is a great opportunity for this young man. This kid has a chance to turn his education opportunity into a major Basketball opportunity should he succeed. This has been a route of many exceptional basketball players, and I'd like to see the same route for him

From Ryan Ernst blog:
Holmes all-state senior basketball player Elijah Pittman this morning signed with Chipola Junior College, located in Marianna, Fla.
“It’s time for a new life and a change and a fresh start,” said Pittman. ”… They have a strong academic program. That’s what I need.”
Pittman (below), who visited the junior college this week, said he plans to attend West Virginia after qualifying academically at Chipola.
“Last year Chipola had the junior college player of the year (Casey Mitchell) and he went to West Virginia,” said Holmes coach David Henley. ”That’s where Elijah has his sights set.”
Chipola coach Jake Headrick, along with assistant and former University of Cincinnati player Keith LeGree, began recruiting Pittman in October. They were immediately impressed with his 6-8 frame and athleticism.
“The more we got to know him, the more we got to like him,” said Headrick. ”You can’t help but like him, especially when you see him play. For me, he seems like a kid who wants to be successful. That’s half the battle at our level.”
Pittman averaged 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks a game as a senior, becoming one of the hottest junior college prospects in the country. He narrowed his choices to Chipola and Hutchinson (Kan.), but committed before ever visiting Hutchinson.
“From what I know, he could have gone anywhere in the country,” said Headrick. ”As far as a high school kid goes, he was one of the top five players in the country who had to go to a junior college. … He’s a kid that if he comes and works hard every day, he’s a kid who will have a chance to play (Division I basketball) anywhere in country.”
Chipola recently was named the junior college Program of the Decade by Basketball Times. It has produced the national player of the year two of the last four years. According to Headrick, 44 of the program’s last 46 players have signed Division I scholarships.
Pittman is the third Holmes senior to sign with a college program. Ricardo Johnson and Jeremiah Johnson signed with Ohio University and Campbellsville University respectively

That's great that Elijah will possibly be playing Big East basketball for the 'Neers in a few seasons.
Best of luck to Mr. Pittman!
