Just got back from the game, and it was certainly a lot closer than it should have been. Betsy Layne definitely brought their "A" game, and Valley did not play one of their better games. However, I think SV did a good job of fighting through foul trouble all night in order to advance and move on.
The first half went about as expected. SV pulled out to a 6-point lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The lead would have been 9, but a Newsome 3-pointer was waved off due to a questionable traveling call right before the buzzer.
The second quarter started off on the wrong foot for Valley, as Elisha Justice picked up a second foul and went to the bench for the rest of the half. However, Valley maintained the lead well in his absence, eventually stretching the lead to 15 before a buzzer-beater by BL cut it to 13 at the break. However, the most damaging part for Shelby Valley was Ashley Hatfield picked up his 2nd and 3rd fouls within about 30 seconds near the end of the quarter, with the third foul being especially questionable. He would not see the floor again much the rest of the way.
The third quarter began on a bad note again for SV with Taylor Newsome picking up his 3rd foul rather quickly, leaving them without 2 of their top 3 players for the rest of the quarter. On offense, Valley did not respond well to the loss of their two bigs, and started settling for jump shots. Elisha was not immune either, as he seemed to try to carry SV all by himself in the quarter but in the process took some poor shots. Meanwhile, Betsy Layne was shooting lights out on the other end, hitting nearly everything they took that quarter. Jordan Newman in particular began to assert himself, and Valley had no defense for his array of post moves. By the time the third quarter ended, the lead had been trimmed to 5, and the SV faithful were definitely getting nervous.
Betsy Layne started off the fourth by hitting the first shot and cutting the lead to 3, but that would be as close as they would get. Ashley Hatfield came down and hit a HUGE three right after that, stretching the lead back to 6 and seemingly calming the Valley players' nerves. The 3 began a 17-5 run that would eventually get the lead back to 15 with three minutes to go. Although both Hatfield and Newsome would each pick up their 4th fouls during the quarter, in the end they were able to weather the storm (including a run of threes by the Bobcats at the end) to hang on for the win.

I will make one other comment: I feel sorry for the teams from the 13th region if they have to deal with these officials on a nightly basis. Pretty poor effort from this group to be calling a regional championship game. They were out of position to make calls all night long, and often just seemed to be taking a guess at what actually happened.
Pathetic. :flush:

First of all and for most!!!!! Valley didn't have a bad game and the refs called the game fair and square!!! The bobcats were outstanding and valley can use any excuse they want for such a close game. The bobcats came to play and that's what they did.they played and made valley earn this win. As for mvp it should have went to newman of b.l. Because he played all three tournament games with full potential. Also valley couldn't stop him tonight now that"s what you call a #1 player. Bobcats you all have made the entire floyd county proud!!!!

Why would Shelby Valley make excuses? They won.
Congrats to Betsy Layne on a nice season though, and Newman did have a good tournament. Betsy Layne should be right in the thick of things next season.

I agree with you that Valley didn't play a bad game, they just didn't play a good one either. Trust me, that was not one of their better efforts this year. And as for the officials, we'll just have to agree to disagree there.
But I agree with you that Valley couldn't stop Newman tonight. He played like a man possessed, and it seemed like he scored every time he touched the ball. I was VERY impressed with him tonight, and if there was an award for Player of the Game, I would give it to him. But he does not deserve the tourney MVP over Elisha Justice, who played a very strong tournament overall.

Are you being serious? Maybe because nearly every Valley fan/supporter boasted that Valley would blow BL out and they ended up winning by 8.
These refs have been terrible the entire tournament and most all others teams have complained and been accused of whining for it. I haven't noticed SV complain a bit until tonight, now that their team didn't have a blowout victory.
03-10-2010, 12:01 AM
LOL... valley fans always gotta have a reason why valley didn't blow a team out, or why valley barely won or why valley lost or why valley didn't do this or didn't do that.. you people are FUNNY!!! just face it the bobcats gave valley a run for their money!!... hahahaha!!!! where was that blow out...haha!! didn't happen!!!! CONGRATS BOBCATS!!!! you all made the 58th district PROUD!!!!!

I guess you havent seen Elisha play..He may be the best player in the 58th..But not the 15th..He is no where near the player that SV's starting 5 is.

Whats this suppose to mean. He has more natural talent than any i've seen in awhile.

I don't see where Shelby Valley fan were boasting that they would blow Betsy Layne out, and if some were, they weren't the only ones. Most people didn't expect much of a game. Hats off to Betsy Layne for making it one.
I'm a Shelby Valley fan, and I don't care if they won by 1 point or 50 points. They won, and that is all that matters. I'm really glad that this appears to be a moral victory for Betsy Layne and several others to keep it within 10 points, but a win is a win.
Shelby Valley's season continues, so why complain? So to answer your question. Yes I was being serious. There is no reason for an excuse in this situation. Shelby Valley won, that is all that matters.
The refs were pretty bad during the tournament, most fans know that, but I'm not going to complain. My team's season is still alive.

:popcorn:This is priceless.
Nobody is even talking bad about Betsy Layne, or Newman, or any other players for that matter.
As a matter of fact, most people are giving a lot of props to Betsy Layne.
I don't see any Shelby Valley fans complaining about this game. Their season is still going, yet you are acting like they are torn to pieces over winning by 8 points. Trust me, we're be alright.
Congrats on the Runner Up title.

Dude everyone that has posted on here has given Betsy Layne all the respect that they deserve. Valley was/is the better team as they have proved twice this season. I wouldve rather seen a game like this instead of a blowout. Makes for a much more interesting game and it just prepares the winner for what is ahead. So Congrats to the Bobcats again and stop tryin to stir up trouble.

Congrats to Valley. A great group of kids who could make a good run in the tourney. They have a great draw and I hope they go far.

newman did play a great game and has not been held back two years to prove it I think its a disgrace that valley holds their boys back just to win in tournaments. way to play bobcats.

I'd love to know who has been held back 2 years on Shelby Valley's team? Because I could have sworn none of them have been.

I don't think anybody was trying to make any trouble. they were just speaking the truth.congrats to both teams on an outstanding game.

Shelby Valley was simply outplayed at times tonight. Betsy Layne played a great game and made their open shots. IMO, if it wasn't for Justice, Valley loses. EJ made some great plays late and hit his free throws. Cody Varney also played one of the better games I've seen him play. The Newsome's or Hatfield weren't very effective tonight, due to foul trouble, but its going to happen because Valley is aggressive on defense and not all refs call it the way SV may prefer.
I do think that Valley was looking ahead to Rupp though, because they didn't play with much urgency at any point in this game it seemed. But I think Valley will be fine next week as long as they stay out of foul trouble and capitalize on their free throws.
Congrats SV... great effort Bobcats!!!

Go to the middle school forum and read all the posts from early in the year criticizing BL for holding their kids back. There is nothing wrong with it, but BL has their fair share as well. No one on SV's team is held back 2 years.
Betsy Layne played a great game and they deserve the praise that has come from their fans as well as the SV fans. I was disappointed with the game that SV played, but they still won and I am extremely happy about that. It is a pretty good accomplishment to still win the regional championship with 3 of your starters spending considerable time on the bench, although they actually extended the lead with Elisha out for much of the second quarter. That is a sign of a great team.
Congratulations SV and good game Betsy Layne. BL will have a pretty good shot at winning it next year.

Reminds me of the game against JC in the 08 15th championship. We shouldve killed them but we were lookin on to rupp and let them keep it closer than it shouldve been.

All I got to say is Way to go BOBCATS!, Even though all the announcers in the area forgot about you all the last two seasons over there high rated other team. You all played and have played awesome. Just wondering if Booher got nervous?
