ATLANTA -- Ryan Williams isn't keeping track of his records.
"Someone eventually will break them anyway," Virginia Tech's fantastic redshirt freshman running back said.
Probably, but in just one season Williams has already made a quite an impression.
He capped a brilliant debut season with a record-setting game, running for two touchdowns to power No. 12 Virginia Tech past Tennessee 37-14 in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Thursday night.
"I just saw green," said Williams of his two touchdown runs. "When I see green, I take advantage of it."
The Hokies (10-3) took the lead with a field goal in the final seconds of the first half and outscored Tennessee 20-0 in the second half on their way to a sixth straight 10-win season.
The only team with a longer active streak is Texas with nine.
Williams, a redshirt freshman, had 117 yards rushing to become Virginia Tech's single-season rushing leader with 1,655 yards. Williams also set Atlantic Coast Conference records with 21 rushing touchdowns and 22 total touchdowns this season but said "I really don't care about records."
The Hokies outrushed Tennessee (7-6) 229-5.
"Ryan was something tonight, particularly at the start of the second half," said Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer. "We got after them good."
Tennessee's star running back, Montario Hardesty, could not keep up with Williams. The Volunteers' senior had 18 carries for 39 yards and a touchdown.
"We got gassed; we got tired," said Tennessee defensive end Chris Walker. "You could tell especially on defense we weren't making plays.
"Ryan Williams is a really great player."
Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton was taken to a local hospital after the game for precautionary reasons, according to a school spokesman. Crompton suffered an undisclosed injury late in the game.
Vols junior safety Eric Berry confirmed after the game he will enter the NFL draft.
Tennessee was hurt by two turnovers which led to 10 points for Virginia Tech, and a dropped pass that cost the Vols a touchdown.
"For whatever reason, we didn't play well today," Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin said. "I was surprised we weren't able to run the ball better."
Rashad Carmichael intercepted a pass by Crompton in the first quarter to set up Williams' first touchdown run. Crompton fumbled when sacked by Nekos Brown late in the fourth quarter. John Graves recovered at the Tennessee 13 to set up Matt Waldron's third field goal, a 22-yarder.
Virginia Tech players dumped a cooler of water on Beamer seconds later. Virginia Tech fans in the sellout crowd of 73,777 cheered, and Beamer raised his fists in response.
Williams sat out the fourth quarter after a left ankle sprain. Virginia Tech fans cheered when Williams left the trainer's table and ran on the sideline, but Beamer gave the fourth-quarter carries to Josh Oglesby and David Wilson.
Wilson had a 3-yard touchdown run with 5:14 remaining.
Williams passed Kevin Jones' school-record record 1,647 yards rushing in 2003.
North Carolina's Don McCauley held the ACC records with 19 rushing touchdowns and 21 total in 1970. Clemson's C.J. Spiller matched the total touchdown mark this season. Georgia Tech's Robert Lavette also rushed for 19 touchdowns in 1982.
Williams passed Jones with his seventh carry of an eight-play touchdown drive in the third quarter. He had long runs of 21 and 32 yards in the drive before setting the record on a 6-yard run to the 3.

Tyrod Taylor scored from the 1 for a 24-14 lead. He completed 10 of 17 passes for 201 yards with an interception.
Crompton completed 15 of 26 passes for 235 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Waldron, who had a 21-yard field goal at the end of the first half, added a 46-yarder -- the longest of his career -- to push the lead to 27-14 early in the fourth quarter.
Tennessee's had a chance to get back into it, but wide-open Denarius Moore dropped a deep pass from Crompton on the Vols' next drive. Kiffin said the play "really took the wind out of our sails."
Williams had two short touchdown runs to give the Hokies a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.
Tennessee then responded.
Hardesty ran through 301-pound defensive tackle Cordarrow Thompson's tackle for a 4-yard run to cap an 80-yard drive.
Janzen Jackson's interception set up Crompton's 2-yard touchdown pass to Moore with 18 seconds remaining in the first half.
Instead of running out the clock, Taylor threw from his 33 to Jarrett Boykin, who was stopped inside the Vols' 5 as the clock apparently expired.
Tennessee players left the field but were summoned back as a video review showed Boykin's knee hit the ground with 2 seconds remaining.
"I knew that there was time left looking at the clock when Boykin made the catch," Taylor said. Waldron's 21-yard field goal gave Virginia Tech a 17-14 halftime lead.
The Hokies, who won the Orange Bowl last season, have back-to-back bowl wins for the first time in school history.

I was hopeful when UT took the 14-7 lead that they had the momentum to win this

Beautiful. Simply beautiful..a perfect way to send out 2009!! Dont get me wrong, I HATE me some Virginia Tech, but I hate them a smidgeon less than Tennessee (and Auburn). Way to go Hokies!

UT never took a 14-7 lead so I don't know where your getting that from.:Thumbs: They tied it up once at 14 then vt took the lead on a last second field goal to go into the half 17 to 14. Then they put up 20 unanswered points in the second half.

It was obvious that the more equipped team won this one. Our patch-work offensive line finally fell apart against what I thought was the best d-line they faced all year. Some strides were made this year, but its apparent that the Vols have a ways to go. Recruiting looks good, just going to take some time. My hats off to Crompton, who has went from death threats, to being one of the best QB's in the SEC. And I'm sure going to miss Eric Berry. Its never easy to replace the best overall player in the SEC.

Wow, you'd think Tennessee would have had a much better year having TWO of the best players in the SEC on their team.

So you're arguing my comment? Or just being a smart a$$?

Arguing

Sure, Crompton played good, but struggled against better competition. He threw for 93 yards against UF and UCLA, 142 against South Carolina, and 176 against Mississippi. Highest games against mediocre Memphis and Georgia, both home games. Tenn played 4 road games, that's pitiful. You can't brag about your team when you play 8 home games, that's ridiculous. In his 4 road games, he threw for 754 yards, 4 TD's, and 4 INT's. In two games he threw 0 TD's. Those are not the numbers of a top SEC QB. Come on now, he threw for 93 yards, at home, against UCLA and you're saying he's a top SEC QB??? Please. Add in the bowl game, and for his road/neutral game sites, he threw for 989 yards, 5 TD's and 5 INT's. Not convincing numbers. So when he played on the road/neutral, Crompton averaged less than 200 passing yards and 1 TD and 1 INT. That doesn't cut it, and that's why UT didn't make the cut this season.

You know an awful lot about UT to be a Duke fan. He did struggle against better teams, but most QB's struggled against the likes of Florida and Alabama. Crompton was as close to horrible as you can be at the first of the season, but turned his season around and only Mallett from Arkansas has more passing yards and touchdowns in the SEC. Also, I wouldn't be so fast to dismiss UT's schedule. If memory serves me right, 9 of the 12 teams we played are in bowl games. Home games or not, I'd put that up against most of the other SEC schedules. You can't tell me that the way he was playing from mid-way through the season until now, he isn't one of the better QB's in the SEC, in what was a down year for QB's in the conference anyway.

Not hard to google. He was an average quarterback on an average team.

You've started a war lol.
01-01-2010, 04:35 PM
Nah. I wouldn't call it a war.
Haven't you read the heck that some of those guys gave me before the Clemson v/s UK Music City Bowl? Of course, most of them have been pretty quiet since their prognostications didn't go their way. One guy (we all call him "the Exaggerator") showed up 2 days later, but he didn't have much to say about much as usual.
I guess I'm just one of those guys who says I'm wrong when I'm wrong? If I lose, I don't make excuses and I don't hide. If you talk smack and then you lose, well, you have to expect to get something in return!
I have said all along that the SEC has the 2 best teams in the country this year (Florida and Alabama). Its the other teams in that conference thinking they can ride their coat-tails and be "great by proxy" that I'm arguing.

Was nice to see Tech win this one by such a lopsided score.

Being a constant thorn in my side is really getting on l my nerves. You are sending me private messages and always saying things about me in threads. You say we all call me the exaggerator. Who is we, and I didn't realize you had so many friends. I'm starting to get a little worried thinking your a little obsessed. Yeah I know Clemson beat UK. I'm over it. You seem like you have some serious problems that you need to leave out of this forum.
Go back to the shrink and be reevaluated. Other wise get a life.. Stop tryin to be a tuff guy in front of a computer screen, it won't get you anywhere.
Oh yeah....Go Blue!!!

(laughing)
Once again, the facts don't get in your way. I sent you one (1) PM because (and if you will look at the thread that was closed I told you not to talk smack and then "conveniently not be around on December 27th") you hadn't gotten on here to take what you had coming!
I like the junior-high psychology try though. The whole, make-it-look-like-I'm-some-crazy-loon speel. Sorry buddy, won't work. Everything you said is on display, even though the thread is closed.
And as for me having "friends" on here, you would actually be surprised. Seems there are a few people listed as Moderators who have irked others on this board. There were even a few UK fans who PM'd me during our interaction on that other thread in reference to some of the comments being made.
Oh yeah, and GO TIGERS! MUSIC CITY BOWL CHAMPS!
Now, can we get back to the subject here? ACC's Bowl Record so far versus "the mighty" SEC teams - 2-0
ACC's overall 3-3
SEC's overall 2-3 (and one of those was in OT versus lowly Northwestern)
01-01-2010, 07:25 PM
I do hate the SEC but it's the best conference, however it was down this year. & a lot of you guys did give FF40212 **** before the Clemson/UK game. He was right, we was worng, fess up and get on with life.
