Congrats to Ashland on a fine tournament performance.
With that said, I would implore everyone to circle January 9th on their calendar. That's when the Tomcats will make the trip to the Fieldhouse.

I put the wrong number for Mason's score in the thread title but I had this already... [ame="http://www.bluegrassrivals.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78477"]http://www.bluegrassrivals.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78477[/ame]

Mason was the better team, and they played like it.
Setty, Gilbert, and another Mason starter (can't remember which one) played the fourth quarter with 4 fouls each, and didn't foul out. Setty and the other post player will get most of the ink, but the two guards for Mason are the engine that drive that team. They handled the ball extremely well, all tournament long.
O'Hearn does a great job with them, and they played the toughest road in the tournament.

The best team in the tournament won it. Mason played with poise, and the two guards (who both made all tourny) were unflappable. Setty is one heckuva player, and he's gonna play at the next level, but those two guards will make any coach look like a genius.
Solid team, winning a good tournament, with good competition.
Congrats to Mason.

Congratulations to Mason Co.
Over many many years, I have never seen a tournament MVP go to someone not on the team that wins the championship.

If they were going to give it to anyone not on Mason Co's team, it should have went to Jake Thelen of Covcath. He was unstoppable dropping 24, 38, and 26.
With that said, very nice win for the Royals over a solid Ashland team on their home floor.
Looking forward to traveling to the fieldhouse Sat night to see Setty and Co. in person.

Not to go off thread topic, but the 1990 16th Region MVP was Mike Helton of Fairview, who lost to Boyd County...there's probably some recent ones, but I'd figure I'd show my age.:eyeroll:

I can see where many would dispute the selection of Skaggs as the MVP. The distinction rarely goes to a player from a losing team- even when the losing team is the host. I believe it is traditional, though certainly not mandatory, to choose as MVP a player from the winning team.
Still, I am pleased with the selection of Skaggs. I first saw him play in lower middle school and wouldn't have bet a dime on his chances of playing high school varsity basketball. I don't believe anyone has worked any harder to improve his level of play. Skaggs is small and lacks the God-given talent of many or most of the better known athletes. However, he maximizes his presence on the floor through effort and determination. More naturally talented players can learn much from watching him.
Skaggs is a good example to all of us as to what can be accomplished with hard work and dedication.
So, while his selection may be controversial to some, I congratulate him for his fine play and for the hard work he has put forth through his years of competition. I am pleased that he has received this much-deserved recognition.

The first time I remember an MVP coming from a losing team was in 1971, when Chuck Howley (linebacker) was chosen the MVP of the Super Bowl, even though his Dallas Cowboys lost the game to the Baltimore Colts.
Personally, I'm in the camp that says that the MVP should come from the winning team, but as I've gotten older, I've become less dogmatic about it.
In this instance, I find myself in agreement with almost all of the posts in the thread. I would have preferred to see one of the Mason County guards (Gilbert or Lang) get the award, but I think Skaggs is definitely the key to Ashland's success. I also think that Thelen was the single most important player in the tournament, and his stats bear that out.

Everydody can make an argument for another player, but Skaggs is more important to his team than anyone else mentioned. He is the ultimate point guard and makes the other players around him better , plus its the ASHLAND
invitational. Give him the award and if you don't like it, host your own tournament.

Quote in today's Ashland paper by Mason's Coach O'Hearn.
âWe had seven fouls on our two best players (Setty and Josh Gilbert) in the third quarter,â he said. âIâve never seen that happen.
I think that pretty much sums up his feelings about the third quarter last night.

I'm just curious, and I really don't know the answer - how many fouls did each team end the game with?
Other than the spurt in the third quarter, I thought the game was pretty evenly called, with the possibility that Mason may have actually had less fouls called on them than Ashland.
Anyone know the final totals?

Both teams committed 16 fouls...Mason Co. had no one foul out and hit 13-16 ft's...Ashland had Delaney foul out and hit 14-17 ft's...
Once again, need to come up with a better "conspiracy theory"...

Is Cory Gregg hurt? Didn't see him in the box score.

There are several things more important than the total number of fouls.
1. Who the foul is called on.
2. When was the foul called.
3. Under what circumstances was the foul called.

I agree. Fouls can also change the tempo and momentum of a game (which is what happened in the third quarter of the championship game at the AIT).
The whole issue of the fouls called in this instance, is driven by the cries in the pre-game threads that Bobby Kouns would be calling the game, and cheating for Ashland. Several people threw that accusation out there, but so far, I've only seen 16BBallFan post any type of retraction.
The funny thing about it is, if most people really knew Kouns, they would know that he really couldn't care less if it snows oats during a game. While someone may think he is blind, deaf and dumb, no one can ever accuse him of having rabbit ears.

Very well said Super Squid. When Ashland was taking it on the chin in the
2nd period they took some pretty hard calls and some no calls. You just expect that the championship game is going to get rough. It's funny though, Mason's success in the 2nd period was ok but, Ashland's success in the 3rd was because the refs were cheating if you follow the logic of some on here. It's laughable to read fans bellyaching after having won the AIT. If the Tomcats are getting any help from officiating it's so suttle I can't seem to pick up on it! These guys (refs) aren't perfect but they're not going to go out and cheat ANYBODY into the winners' circle. Next I guess, we'll have to include crying towels in with the awards ceremony.

I've always been amused by the people that talk about how this ref is doing this, or another ref is doing that - when they themselves have never called a game of anything in their lives.
I try not to critique the work of the engineers that design nuclear reactors for a very good reason - I have no idea of what they do, or how they do it.
Sadly, the stands are usually filled with people that have no idea of what officiating is like, or how the guys wearing the stripes prepare for it - but that doesn't stop them from presenting themselves as experts on what the refs think, say, and do.
Sigmund Freud should have such insight into the human psyche.
