Obviously they don't have a 4A male enrollment, otherwise their request wouldn't have been denied.

The Golden Eagles were placed in 5A because of the timing of the classification - if a one-year enrollment had been used to classify teams, JC would be a 4A team. I believe that the other reason that JC requested the change in classification was travel time. Aside from Ashland (a one-our trip), I believe that Montgomery County is JC's closest 5A opponent. Bryan Station was also in the district at that time and Woodford County is an even longer trip from Paintsville.

It does suck to have to travel that far to play a bad team. If you are going to travel that far, at least you hope it is to play a good team that is going to make you better.

Good thing they did go since the film given to Cov Cath from JC was blank DVDs. They were also late with the film exchange with Scott. Apparently the film exchange in an issue with JC.

I heard that the tapes JC had received was split and spliced and all kinds of goodies. It is just not an issue on JC's side!:please:

I think this is going to be a pretty high scoring game. Not in the 50s or 60s, but it would not surprise me if both teams score in the high 30s or 40s.
JC will have a lot of success running the ball, particularly on the second man through option off tackle. I just don't see CovCath having the players at the OLB positions to stop that play. If they overcommit from the outside, Hall will burn them with the keeper. With CovCath losing their best inside lber, they are going to have to really work hard to stop the first man through option up the middle, and that will mean the second man through option should pick up big yards.
Likewise, I think that CovCath will score a lot of points. CovCath's qb is much better in my opinion than Ashland's qb. Hunter is a nice player, but Erpenbeck is a much better runner. He may not pass the ball as good as Hunter, but Erp has much, much better receivers to work with in my opinion. Unless JC's pass defense has improved a whole lot since the Ashland game, I think CovCath will score often via the pass. While CovCath's running game is not as good as JC's, it's still pretty good. Nice running backs and Erp's a very dangerous runner out of the qb spot.
If CovCath wins, the fact that JC plays more players both ways will have a lot to do with it. Plus, I think CovCath has more overall team speed. Hall is extremely fast and Dillon isn't shabby. Jude has nice speed also. But across the board, CovCath has more team speed based on my observations.
Folks basing a CovCath win in part or in whole on the fact that Scott scored a lot of points last week, might be over estimating such. It was something like 41-7 at half, wasn't it? Scott I'm sure left its starters in most of the second half. It sounds like JC got some younger kids in to gain some experience and try to develop some depth on a team that, based on the number of kids playing both ways, needs badly to develop depth for this year and starters for next year. Which is smart coaching by Matney. Remember years ago when Highlands was beating Lincoln Co. by a ton of points at half? Lincoln kept its starters in the second half; Highlands played sophomores and freshmen the entire second half. Lincoln scored a ton of points in the second half. If you look at the scoreboard, you'd think Highlands D wasn't that strong. If you were at the game, you knew otherwise.
I do want to comment on the smashmouth football comments. JC and some other mountain teams do play power football very well. Although in JC's case, I think there is as much deception as there is power to their offense. It's not like they line up in the power I and just try to run the ball down your throat by giving the football to their tailback every time (ala Boone County of years past). Rather, they attempt to deceive the defense with their decision as to who gets the ball. It's a very nice offense and they moved the ball very well last year against Highlands. If Matney could ever develop a strong passing game, it would be an extremely good offense. But based on what I've observed so far, he hasn't done that this year. Unfortunately for JC, their best receiver is their starting qb. I'm sure the CovCath coaches will be looking for the play when Hall moves to wide receiver and the back up qb comes into the game to pass the ball to Hall (which is the play JC used to beat Ashland).
If I was CovCath's DC, I'd put 11 within 7 yds of the ball on every play except the one that Hall moves to wide receiver. JC might burn me for a touch down or two if Hall or Dillon got in the open, but I'd take that chance to otherwise shut down the run and force JC to pass. If they can force JC to pass in order to win, CovCath will win the game. I'd also have my fastest and best athlete on D (Garnick) spy Hall all night long. Bratton and Dillon are fine runners, but shutting down Hall's running game is the key. Plus, I wouldn't mine Bratton and Dillon getting a lot of carries and being hit a lot. It will tire them out when they play defense, making CovCath's O much more effective. Sort of the "give a little to gain a lot" strategy.
Bottom line: I think this is going to be a close game. CovCath's O line and D line are better than JC's. CovCath's qb can run the ball as well as JC's but is a better passer. CovCath has the better receivers. JC has the better running game and will attack the part of CovCath's D that is the weakest. If CovCath over commits to stop that part of the field, JC will be successful up the middle and wide unless CovCath puts 11 in the box and is willing to give up the one or two long touchdown runs. CovCath has to make the long bus ride and JC has the home field advantage. All balances out in my assessment to one very close football game.

What do you mean cut and spliced? Cov Cath ended up with about 8 different game tapes that other teams provided them on JC. It seems other teams alos had exchange problems with them.

Well all the predictions are in and the trash has been talked, it is game day. I think the game is as easy as this:
If JC comes out early and takes care of the ball, runs their offense and controls the clock, they win.
If JC has early tunovers and does not control the the ball CC wins.
As a JC fan who can remember several losing seasons when a play off game was a dream to going deep in the playoffs, this is a treat. This CC rivalry has become a great series. I will say that JC playing teams like CC and Highland through the years (in addtion to the Bells, Boyles and Belfrys) has made the program much stronger. I hope JC wins, but just being able to watch a great game at at great staduim is a treat for us old fans who rememeber the lean times.

As one of the older JC people on Rivals, I remember the days where playoffs happened for other teams. It is truly a treat to be involved with JC football and I am looking forward to tonight. With that said, it out the door, dinner with my son and Friday night football. Who could ask for more? Add a JC win and it can't get better.

Now that I can agree with you on.
JC has one of the best atmospheres I've ever experienced for a high school game and their facilities are first class.
Good luck to both teams.
