Checking in: Cov. Holmes
#1
From Jody Demling's blog:

I'll start my "checking in" feature with one of the state's top teams - Covington Holmes.

Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be checking in on some of the state's top teams or teams with top players. I'll focus on those teams top games this coming season.

Holmes won the state title last season and returns two of the state's top five players in Ricardo Johnson and Elijah Pittman.

And the Bulldogs have a schedule that will have them playing all over the state this season.

The first two weekends of the season the Bulldogs are headed to Western Kentucky. They'll play Bowman Academy on Dec. 5 at Marshall County HoopFest and will then meet Memphis Central on Dec. 12 in the Kentucky/Tennessee Shootout at Warren Central.

Holmes will also compete in the King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale Dec. 17-22 and then after Christmas the Bulldogs will play in the Lloyd Invitational.

After the holidays, the only other bigger one-day event the Bulldogs will play in is the Joe B. Hall Classic at Montgomery County against Christian County on Jan. 16.

But there are plenty of marquee regular-season games, including Jan. 6 against Cincinnati Princeton, at Mason County on Jan. 2, at Fort Thomas Highlands on Feb. 5 and home against Warren Central on Feb. 6.

The Bulldogs are the likely No. 1 - or maybe No. 2 - pick in the preseason polls. While they won't go undefeated because of the tough schedule, I look for David Henley's team to be tested and ready to repeat its title come postseason time.

This will be fun to follow, hopefully throughout the year.

I agree. Their match up with Memphis Central really has me intrigued.

Memphis Central features several D1 prospects:

6'7 Jarnell Stokes- #3 sophomore in the country..already holds offers from Missouri and Memphis

6'4 Tim Peete- 4 star senior that is already committed to Tulsa

6'4 Andre Applewhite- Had a really good summer and is considered a big time prospe in the 2012 class

It'll be interesting to see throse three match up with the Johnson Brothers and Pittman.

Holmes returns a veteran team that nearly swept the state last season, and hung in to take home the big prize. Hard to see how they won't do it again this season.
