Great smashmouth football game in the first half. SV took up 8 minutes in the third quarter and they were unsuccessful on the drive. Burchett took the game over for Pburg in the second half. Pburg just seemed to wear out SV in the second half. Overall great game though! Pburg now district champs!

Great game by both teams.
Valley played a heck of a game, just fell short
The Fumble recover by Pburg in the 2nd Quarter is what killed Valley the most.
Great game by both teams, could of gone either way!!
Hats off to Prestonsburg

Good win P'burg. Great effort Valley! I think you proved (even in a loss) that you are for real this year. The running game gave P'burg fits for most of the game (especially B.J. with over 200 yards on the ground). Burchett was the difference in the game though.

What a game. Shelby Valley turned some heads tonight. B.J. Roberts is for real my friends. The kid is an absolute animal when he has the ball. It was all the Blackcats could do to even tackle him. The fan section for SV was absolutely pumped up. I enjoyed them taking pride for their team.
Michael Burchett once again led Prestonsburg to victory. Shelby Valley's defense played very well for the most part. Burchett didn't really get to pick apart the defense like he normally would because of protection issues up front. The SV D-Line was pretty dominant tonight. But on the ground is where Burchett won the game. The QB draw play was very effective tonight for Prestonsburg. I saw a lack of heart from the Prestonsburg team that I haven't seen all year. The Blackcats just weren't into this game like they usually are. Still yet, you have to get the credit to the Wildcats. They played their hearts out and it showed on the field. Coach Norman had the Wildcats fired up and ready to play. Norman is a fine coach, Valley is lucky to have him.
Anyhow, great game to watch. Burchett continues to prove every week that he is the reason for this team's success. Congrats Blackcats!

Valley did play a great game. I noticed that BJ Roberts has considerably less touches then the Hughes kid on the season and I'm curious as to why. He is a GREAT running back and proved it tonight against a good Blackcat defense. I thought Prestonsburg's playcalling tonight was way to conservative and predictable. Not the same Blackcat offense I have seen the first part of the year.

Valley's O-line is the best I have seen in a long, long time. The Valley running backs had five yards before a defender ever laid a hand on them.
This is without a doubt the most fundamentally sound Valley team ever. Execution every play. Coaches, great job!
Blackcats, all that sweat and pain all year long paid off tonight. Conditioning won this one. Good job.
Not diissing Corbin, but these two could meet again.

Congrads P-burg. Hats off to SV on a good game.

Great game P-Burg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best high school games I have seen in a while. The 3rd quarter had SV grinding out a long drive and P-Burg puts up the big goal line stand and then takes 90 yards for the score. Two posessions and a great quarter of football.
Two great individual efforts tonight with Burchett for P-Burg and BJ Roberts for Shelby Valley. Both of these kids are great high school football players.
TO SHELBY VALLEY PLAYERS
You have to think bigger this year....not just the playoffs but trying to get back to meet P- Burg again.

For my money Burchett is the POY in the mountains this season. Once again he steps up to lead Pburg to victory in a close game.

Well, it wasn't pretty, or even the Prestonsburg offensive attack I have seen all year, but we won. I have to tip my hat to Valley though. They are definitely getting better and should not hang their heads. Roberts was a beast that Pburg couldn't bring down.
If my memory serves me correct, Prestonsburg did not throw the ball the entire 2nd half. I realize P-burg won the game without the air attack, but I'm not sure I understand the planning that went into this game. It's kinda like they were trying to prove something with their running game. I have to say, I didn't like it. You have a QB that can pick a defense apart, yet you run the ball every down. But, whatever, it's a win. Good luck to Shelby Valley the rest of the year.

Nothing but respect aimed at the Shelby Valley Wildcats tonight !!!
The SV game plan was very well thought out as it shortened the game immensely. Valley couldn't have asked for a better start - it got the defensive stop on P-burg's first possession and proceeded to march down the field. The offensive line was a BIG bunch of boys and as long as the ball was kept between the TE's, Prestonsburg just didn't have the bulk to stop the power game of Roberts&Co. It may be a 50's style offense, but it was executed very well.
But I'll tell you what impressed me more - the SV defensive gameplan. The press man-to-man while bringing blitzers was an EXCELLENT idea on the slick field. The press took away the quick/short passing game, the rush didn't leave time to throw deep, and the slick field didn't allow the receivers a chance to "make a move" to separate from coverage.
For Prestonsburg...this was a needed gut check. The defense surrendered a lot of rushing yards, but other than one long run, SV had to run a lot of plays to reach the red zone. And best of all, when a stop HAD to be made, the defense got it.
On offense, Burchett made a lot of yards on the ground. I wish the coaching staff wouldn't "fall in love" with that, though, and would reserve it to no more than 6-7 called runs/game. I'm holding my breath every time he takes off with it!! Don't know why the Blackcats went away from the power sweep (NOT the jet) they were using early - it was effective as the offensive line was beating the defense to the point of attack. The "Blackcat formation" looked very interesting, too, as it really overloaded the strong side...but maybe it needs a little more practice time (as evidenced by the illegal procedure penalty).
This was a VERY entertaining football game...THANK YOU to both teams !!

B.J. Roberts ended up with 190 yards rushing and 2 TD's.

Having not been there, but judging from the posts, it seems like both teams accomplished some good things. Pburg got the win and responded when they needed it most to a great SV gameplan, and the 'Cats played a good game and got some respect they deserve and almost pulled out a big win.

BC4L...
If I knew for a fact all the playoff games would take place on a dry field in good conditions, I would agree with you. However, I'm thinking the November weather won't cooperate.
With that said, a power running game of some sort MUST be present in P-burg's bag of tricks to challenge for a trip to Bowling Green. Tonight we saw flashes of what form it may take with Craynon and Jamerson on power sweeps (NOT jet) and McKinney and Burchett between the tackles (out of the option gun). We also saw ONE play in a Wildcat-like overload formation (the "Blackcat" formation - very cool, btw) which would have scored easily if not for a procedure call.

Absolutely !!!
This is the reverse side of the same coin Pike Central jingled against the Pirates last week.
I'm really tickled to see BETTER fundamental football coming from all these schools: Shelby Valley, Pike Central, and Allen Central.

I have to disagree, I know the field was slick, but as a reciever you have to LOVE when a defense is playing straight up man. The Shelby Valley corners played with their backs to the ball a lot tonight, in that situation, Prestonsburg WR's have to win that matchup! They have to, because they were loading the box, and they were giving Prestonsburg the quick stuff, they just never ran anything to burn valley on that coverage. They never attempted it. Covering someone man to man on a route (besides a fade) is probably the hardest thing to do in football. When you have a team that is willing to do that, you have to have confidence in your players to win that battle and give them a chance... And as long as I have watched Prestonsburg Football they have always had screens in their game, and I don't think they ran one single screen tonight to get Valley out of that defense.
I will give Valley credit for their gameplan, but I am disappointed in the offense game plan to counter. But as it was said earlier a win is a win...

Congrats to the Blackcats. I had an opportunity to go this game, but I had to go back home to watch my Patriots of course.
Glad to see Prestonsburg get the win though. Looks like it was a good one.

One thing I can say about Valley though, despite playing a great game, the move the pulled before the game trying to ruin Pburg's senior night was inexcusable.

I would just like to say congratulations to Prestonsburg! It just seemed as if Burchett just put the team on his back in the second half to guarantee the win for the night. Very impressive player and young man!

SV defensive game plan was outstanding. That being said, at the time, I did not care for the play calling of Pburg. After sleeping on it, I am starting to like it a little better, though. The Cats have relied on the pass (very successfully) all year, and to make a deep, deep playoff run, we need to able to pound the ball when teams take away the pass. The 90+ yard drive to score the final touchdown was a thing of beauty, and I don't think a single pass was thrown on the entire drive.
Couple of points: This game played out pretty much like I thought it would. Everyone knew (even if they didn't want to admit it) that SV's running attack was outstanding. But the question was not if they could rack up rushing yards (yep, they did) but whether they could grind out enough POINTS against Prestonsburg's "bend but don't break" defense. In the end, 12 points were just not enough. Prestonsburg had 1 touchdown called back, and could have had another on the pass interference play on their sideline, when the DB just tackled the receiver instead of letting him go by for the easy score. With SV's offense, penalties and turnovers can kill you, because if you are going to milk so much clock, you can't afford to not put points on the board. There was a noticable drop in demeanor in the Wildcats after the 4th and goal when they didn't score. Mega kudos to the Wildcats though. I told some of their fans after the game that they have a great team and that we may meet up again. They may very well beat Corbin in the playoffs. That will be an outstanding game.
The Blackcats played sluggishly most of the game. I suspect that alot of that was due to it being Senior night. Most teams play pretty sluggishly on senior night due to all the hype, excitement, and festivities. I hope this whole thing of starting slowly does not become a pattern. Prestonsburg needs to come out of the gate blazing if they are to make it to the Regional finals, with a shot at Bowling Green. Another aspect is that Coach Allen, who has called plays most of the year, missed the whole week of practice with H1N1, and was only at the game last night by the grace of God. I'm sure that played some part in the game prep and play calling.
All in all great game by 2 very good football teams. It is in everyone's best interest when there are more good mountain teams in this area. Good luck in the playoffs to both teams.
