Since we have a "Best Backfield in the Mountains" thread and I am not from the Mountains, I'd like to start a thread on this topic.
Who do you think has the best backfield in Class 4A?
I'll post what I think later.

There are alot of great backfields in 4a...Bell co has a great running game..so does Boyle County..There are just so many ways you can go..Allen county has three runners that average above 80 yards per game..the qb, Cooper may not be that accurate of a thrower but he can sure scramble..he averages right at 80 yards per night..York averages over 100 yards per game and Boards averages right at 80 as well..you wont find that on many teams people..I really think you have to give the edge to Allen County scottsivlle.

It's really hard to pick one team in this class to be the top rushing team. Boyle County has been rolling people all year with their ground attack, as has Bell County and Allen County. I'm not sure who has the most team yards, but I would bet that ACS is right at the top. They may have the most rushing yards than any other team in 4A. I could be wrong, but that's guesstimating by stats from the team site.
ACS has two dominant runners in Brandon Boards and Hunter York. Boards has carried this team and always gets the first down when needed. York will give you the same thing. Boards is just more athletic and has the moves that most backs don't.
Boyle County of course has the great MacShara. I bet he averages at least 150-180 yards per game. Anyone know stats on MacShara? I'm not sure who the backup rushers are, but they obviously have produced this season.
Bell County features powerful Matt Raines and speedster Cory Davenport. Those two are easily the best rushers in the Mountains I'm sure. I heard Bell County has four or five rushers that they use effectively. I don't know any names though.
If I had to rank the top three, here's what it would look like:
1. Bell County
2. Boyle County
3. Allen County-Scottsville

Rockcastle County’s Sophomore Clark Rowe has 1476 Rushing yards and 18 TDs in 8 Games. He Leads 4A District 7 in rushing yards. Boyle County Rees MacShara has 1386 Yards with 17 TD’s.

According to KHSAA Rowe has 1175 yards on 169 carries with 14 TD's. Are they missing a game? Sounds like they might be.
FWIW, Rowe had 85 yards on 21 carries vs. Boyle when they met earlier in the season. Bell County held him to 77 yards on 19 carries.
Rees 1386 yards are on 89 carries in 7 games.
According to KHSAA the leading rushing team in the state is Allen Central.

Not all coaches put their teams stats on KHSAA, MaxPreps, and those websites. I'm sure Allen Central is up there, but not leading the state in rushing. I may be wrong, but I don't think that is correct.
As for the thread topic, I've got to say that Bell County has the top rushing attack in 4A. They have four backs that can get it done. Raines, Davenport, Hilton, and Carton can flat out play, most notably Raines and Davenport.
I hope this doesn't get the Bell County fans going wild again like usual.

Yea I think what you seen had only counted 7 games. i had 301 rushing yards last week in Rcockastle 8 game. you can find his updated stats on there Schedule on kshaa.org
on Rock's Schedule on khsaa.org when you click stats in says Clark had 85 yard on 21 carries in the boyle game. He has only been held under 100 yards in two games (#1Boyle and #2Bell)
In my Opinion I think Rees is Mr football worthy. he would Have my vote

Reese Macshara, has 1610 yds,and 21 tds after 8 games thats 201yds per game.those are the most impressive numbers i have seen so far.for a individual.

Yes it is. I love watching him play

I think the thing that stands out about reese is the number of carries he has had compared to anyone else in the state.his yds per carry are outstanding.

I agree, i have seen him play in 3 games so for this season (Johnson central, Rockcastle, Lex Cath) it johnson central game he had 2 or 3 runs over 60 yards, in the Rockcastle game i think Boyle ran 5 plays with 5 td's all of them where rees. he did the samething to lex cath. it seems like no one can catch him when he gats in the open field.

Hey AllenCoPride, you have any season stats for ACS?
10-22-2009, 01:27 AM
rees is a good player...but this is the best backfield which contains more than just the running back...Bell might not have no standout that has 1600 yards but with all they share the ball with they by far have the best backfield in 4a and in the moutains...

You might want to check the tapes again on Boyle's backfield. Rees has less than 100 carries on the season. They have other very good backs whose stats (if published) might just rival Bell's.
You also have to remember that the Rebel's run out of a single back set the majority of times. That means that any 2 back set or full house offenses have a "leg up" so to speak in this discussion but doesn't mean it tells the WHOLE story.
When I tried to do some individual game digging on KHSAA, it appeared to me that Bell's rushing numbers were no greater than Boyle's. In fact Bell had one game, maybe 2 under 200 yards. Of course that was because they scored on every special teams and defensive play imaginable. I'm not sure Boyle has had one of those yet.
I could easily see Bell as #1 but Boyle might be as well. Maybe we'll get to find out later in the year.

Believe me reese is not all Boyle has in the back field, after 8 games Boyle has 2448 yds rushing with an averege of 306 yards per game.over 800 yds of that comes from the other backs that carry the ball. After 7 games Bell had 1594 yds, with an averege of 228 yards per game .i dont think they overcame the 854 yards difference in one game.so your claim for Bell having the best back field in 4a is very shaky in my opinion.niether team is ranked in the top 5 team wise in 4a.Boyle is #8,Bell is #15.those are rankings for 7 games.there are several teams that have more yds,and yds per game totals than Boyle and Bell in 4a.no disrespect to Bell, after looking at the numbers in 4a im not sure either team can lay claim to the best back field in 4a.

Stats don't always mean everything. McCreary Central was leading the state in rushing at 1 point.
Yes Boyle has a great backfield. I seriously doubt anyone from Bell Co. can tackle them. McShara is Mr. Football and Dawson is going to Notre Dame/UK. Hard to top that. I would say they will both have 200+ against Bell IF they do met up.

:thatsfunn
I love sarcasm. :eyeroll:
All Lambert was doing was acutally using FACTUAL data to support a claim. What he discovered was neither team is in the top 5 statistically and therefore it's hard to imagine the "best backfields" to be #8 and #15 in actual production, wouldn't you think???

10-22-2009, 10:11 AM
What about Lawrence County, they already have a fullback with over 1,000 yards and 18 TD's, and two more running backs with over 500 and could end up with over 1,000 themselves. they average 350 yds rushing a game.
10-22-2009, 10:15 AM
Not really.
Going by Stats Barnes of Bourbon is the best RB in 4A.
Vincent from Fairdale is the best QB in 4A.
Lawerence Co. is the best Offense in 4A.
Boyle Co. is the best scoring defense in 4A followed closely by West Jessamine. (wow what a district for defense)
West Jessamine has the best rushing defense in 4A.
Ok I think you get the point. Stats are good to look at but not the end all say all of the "BEST" discussion.

These best of discussions are ridiculous. How on earth does anyone know who has the best backfield in 4A? It's pure speculation and opinion. Unless you have watched every 4A team in the state play multiple times against various opponents, on various fields, and in various conditions you can't even make an educated guess. Even if you have done that it is still just your opinion.
So here's my opinion; Rees MacShara is the best back in the best backfield in 4A. The answer is Boyle County. That's my opinion, and it stinks...just like yours.

Bell fans overall are great fans and very courteous. We're no different in majority as any other fanbase.

I totally agree. No way to judge the best backfield. I would say by talent alone (IMO only) Bell and Boyle would be to close to call as far as their backfields but I do think they're the two best hands down.

In reference to these last two posts that I am quoting:
Rowe's two games of under 100 yards, as a Sophomore, show his grit. Both games against Bell and Boyle show that he carried the ball a pretty good number of times and still ended up averaging over 4 yards per carry. Bell and Boyle both have GREAT defenses.
Rockcastle scored 22 on Boyle County IN DANVILLE. Rowe was leading that attack. Nobody else has scored anymore than 13 on Boyle this season. I know we are talking about rushing only but when you look at the Boyle County game, you have to notice that Rowe had 85 yards rushing AND 4 catches totaling 34 yards. Most catches were probably short catches that he turned into bigger plays. That gives Rowe 119 yards of offense for that game.
The Bell County game also saw Rowe averaging over 4 yards per carry. A total of 97 yards of offense ON Log Mountain. Not great but it shows his versatility against a GREAT defense.
When you mention backfields you have to give credit to the big bruising fullbacks/halfbacks. John L Saylor averages 6.4 yards per carry and has almost 600 yards rushing and 7 touchdowns. When you combine Rowe and Saylor's numbers you get: 2046 yards rushing and 25 TD's!!!
Also, I know that the O-Line is not in the backfield but they deserve credit for the teams rushing success. Rock's line is not the best in the state but they do have 2 Sophomores that start on it. When you take into account that Rowe, Lake, and Adams are Sophomores and John L Saylor is a Junior. Next year you return the entire backfield and 2-3 starters off the offensive line, these numbers could get even BETTER!:yikes:
With my speech finished  Boyle, Bell, Allen Central, Lawrence County and Rowan County (I know about the schedule but still) all have great backfields.

I would like to see what Davenport would rush for if he got to carry the ball more. He's done at halftime of most games and during that playing time he shares the ball with many more. Just a thought.
