I never said he wasn't going to put up numbersor gain yards. Even if it's muddy and it's one slip it could make a difference on a TD in a 6 point or less game. And i'm not perfect, it is an opinion. He may set a school record for yards and TDs. Nobody knows until the game is played.

Modern football. Seriously! If a kid changes schools simply because of the offense or defense that a school runs then that kids parent should be kicked in the crotch. That is the kind of attitude I wouldn't want on my team and you are welcome to them. It also happens to be looked down upon by the khsaa.

I don't know about that one f-ball. If you are a kid who wants to play quarterback at the next level (any level above high school) You are not going to get that chance at Russell. You won't get that chance if you are a reciever either. One thing I will say though is......Isn't it strange that almost all high schools and colleges run the spread but, when you get to the NFL they want you to get under center and hand the ball off and take those 3-5-7 step drops. I will add this fact also.....There are really only 2 teams around here that have done anything at the state level and those 2 teams would be Russell and Ironton and , they are both ground oriented teams. Honestly though if I was a kid I wouldn't want to play at either place. If I'm at russell If I'm not a guard or an all world running back I'm not going to have any fun.

I hate the stupid spread! It only works if you have the talent to run it. Especially when nobody on your team probably runs faster than MAYBE a 4.9. It was great when it originated in high school form. But people know how to defend it now.

I gotta call you out on this one old pal. If you are a good enough player colleges will find you. Even if you are a QB in a ground oriented offense. Example: Randle Cobb. Better example: Brett Favre.
If you are a linemen it really doesn't matter if you run the spread or the wing t or the veer. You are not going to get the glory. In fact it is more fun to run block than pass protect. It is really more fun to win.
Kids play football because they love the game and if you are good enough for the next level they will find you no matter what system you played in in high school.
Also Russell is by all means a ground oriented team every year under McGlone, but I think it is a misconception that they never pass. If he has the players and needs to throw the ball Coach McGlone will pass. In fact from 2005-2007 I believe he had a 1,000 yard passer at QB in each of those seasons. If not over 1,000 they were close to it.

Besides fun, that FBALL mentioned, a lot of kids like to be on a team and program that wins consistently, with an occasional chance to play for a state championship.

Russell passed quite a bit back when I played didn't they? I was thinking back in 02 Michael Gabbard threw the ball quite often. I may be wrong though. It's just recent years when they've held the ball to the ground completely. But honestly if a kid is in a school system and is truly a great QB. And he sees, well actually his parents see his schools varsity coach running the ball every down. He's not going to stay if he has a true shot. He may be good enough to draw attention like you said. But why take a risk? When he could play in a passing offense where it's all throw and some run. Or vice versa a high caliber runningback stay in a passing offense where it's all throw. Example why would Josh Gross ever transfered to Raceland to a passing offense. And why would any of Racelands receivers go to Russell. You always put yourself in the best position. Sports have become more and more serious. Used to you just played the game you didn't question what offense or defense was bieng played. Now parents are becoming more and more involved in sports now than they were in previous years. More and more players are bieng held back and transfering.
And I'm not relating this to Russell and Raceland. I don't keep up with Jr. High that well so I couldn't tell you who transfered or not. I'm just speaking general football period.

Well I have been setting here for a couple of days just reading, now I have to open my big mouth!
I hate when people refer to a team as being down. If Russell does not make it to the state championship game, they will be considered down compaired to the last 3 or 4 years, with the exception of last year. Russell 3A is ranked #5 in AP poll this week and that IMO that is very good. As far as a weak schedule, not really, of course Russell has normal district games and then awesome larger schools such as Ashland and Ironton. The only team Russell plays that is smaller is Raceland. I am not sure how anyone can come to that conclusion as a weak schedule. I loved playing Ironton this year, although the outcome was not what I wanted but is was good experiance for the team.
I know rankings and who beat who and by how much don't mean sqat! But when making a decision of who will win this game it sure does help making that factor.
Russell's defense will certainly have to step up from last week, but I have seen the Big D really look good this year. I am sure Coach Morris will have them ready. Jones is a animal, Raceland will undoubtedly have a very tough time holding him. Will Rice is another great advantage on offense for Russell.
I see Russell winning this one with ease.
Russell 35
Raceland 12
I almost forgot IMO Raceland does have the crappest field in the area. As far as 1A schools, Fairview does has a good WHOLE field.

Sorry but Ironton is a smaller school than Russell. Ironton has 517 students 9-12 and Russell 650.

Another it doesn't matter what Russell is ranked in 3a they are down from past years when they have won 10+ games and haven't proved to be a title contender so far this year so imo they are down.

I think that is basically what I wrote, minus the 10+ games, sorry, I am not as smart as you. I didn't know the exact size of Ironton, but they are legendary.

Just heard Russell is out of school because of the flu and Raceland could miss a day of school due to the flu. Will the game still go on if both schools are out?
10-21-2009, 10:09 PM
Just a quick comment about muddy fields... in my opinion.. whether its a pass or run oriented offense, rain and muddy conditions are going to slow that offense down somewhat (obviously more for a passing team)... With Russell having a more potent offense than Raceland (seeing how raceland's offense seems to have never made it out of team camp)... any rainy or muddy condition will be an advantage in raceland's defensive favor. The Rams are going to have a rough time getting any offensive production regardless of weather. Anything that might slow down the devil offense will help Raceland... I dunno.. just my opinion I guess... Weather conditions may not make a difference at all.. TBA on Friday night

Ironton might have smashed Russell in football this year but last year in baseball we crushed them 19-4. I think Racelands baseball team could have beaten them as well.
Ironton has 2 sports that they're real good at and that's bball and football.

I was wondering that myself, I know they have had Basketball games on snow days, so it shouldn't matter that they are out of school, hopefully not.

Don't count on Raceland being out of school this week... Worthington's attendance is way down.. but both Campbell and the High School actually have better attendance than usual for this time of the year... and the numbers that matter in deciding to call school off are district wide figures. Basically, Campbell and the High School is keeping the district numbers up...
Unless the swine explodes in the next 48 hours.. no chance Raceland gets out

Russell is out mainly because of excessive illness at the Primary School. The high school and middle school attendance has actually gone up in recent weeks. The K-3rd grade is way down right now and that is the reason for school being called off for the next couple of days. The game will not be effected.

As for Why would Josh Gross go to a school like Raceland. Well that is similar to the offense he ran in college at Georgetown. Why would a reciever from Raceland go to Russell? Maybe that reciever at Raceland would be a playmaker at RB or even a QB in a running offense. Maybe he would just be a good reciever at Russell. They have had some good recievers over the last few years. Mitchell, Ison, Clark, Frazier, Sizemore. All were very productive recievers. The point is Russell's offense gets criticized alot, mostly by Red Devil fans, but it is not as boring as some people make it out to be. If Ivan has the kids to pass he will. It is also an offense that has averaged 36.14 points per game over the last five years. I'm sorry but that seems pretty dynamic to me.

Stop making fun of our turf!!! Russell doesn't have turf. why don't you tell us all the story about how you almost lost the Greenup game your senior year when you snapped the ball over the punters head.

I'm pretty sure mounting a live ram on a scoreboard is illegal in Kentucky as well as most other states. At least in public. It may be legal in West Virginia.
