I should have been more specific, all time top five programs.

1. Ashland
2. Bell County
3. Corbin
4. Breathitt, Belfry, Pikeville
With Ashland Number one, you can mix the other top 6-7 about anyway and end up with a great looking list.

I will give you the super seven:
1) Belfry-multiple state titles and a fan base second to none in the mountains. 6 state championship appearances.
2) Breathitt County. 3 titles makes a statement in itself.
3) Bell County. Multiple state titles and one of the greatest coaches.
4) Ashland-If you go back to the no face mask days, they are number 1. The 1990 team has to rank as one of the most potent ground attacks in state history
5) Russell. Basically a mirror image of Belfry's history with one of the greatest coaches ever.
6)Pikeville. 3 championships says a lot. Recent history keeps the Panthers down the list a little bit.
7) Corbin and Presonsburg. Great traditions and fantastic followings.
Though I do have these in a list and ranked, they are very interchangeable. For my money when you look at a program it is not just championships or wins and losses. It includes the fans, the passion and support for the program, the respect that other schools view that program with, and an overall aura that the program radiates. Belfry tops my list, but out of the teams I named, I could make a similar case for Pikeville, Ashland, Russell, Bell County and Breathitt County.

North Laurel may be starting their run at a dynasty. South Laurel has owned the basketball title for decades. North is coming around in football. This new coach has the North Laurel district excited.

If it is all time then I would say in no particular order Bell, Belfry, Breathitt, Ashland, Prestonsburg and Corbin. If this list is from the 90's on, I add Rockcastle to the list.

What type of football teams did Lawrence County have in the eighties and seventies.

A dynasty means you have to consistently win over several decades not three games. When you consistently beat Corbin, Letcher Central, Whitley County and other winning programs you can start preparing for a dynasty. Beating a South Laurel team by one point is nothing to brag about.

1. Morgan County
2. Magoffin County
3. Betsy Lane
4. Powell County
5. Knott County Central
lol, I am just having fun so I hope no one gets offended.
1. Breathitt County -Breathitt no doubt over the past 15 years has been the best football program in the mountains. Breathitt has 3 state championships, 3undefeated season, 4 trips to the state championship game, 42 game winning streak, and 5 regional titles.
1. Bell County - Bell has always been a powerhouse in mountain football. They have two state championships and the best high school coach in Ky. Bell also has the best fan base following in the mountains. Bell County seems to never have a down year.
1. Belfry - Belfry has no doubt been the best football program in the mountains this decade. Belfry has back to back state championships in this decade along with another trip to the championship game. Belfry also has a strong fan base. Belfry's facilities are like no other in the mountains.
**Basically I think the first three are too close to call and any of the these great programs could easily be #1.
4. Ashland
5. Pikeville
Prestonsburg and Corbin also deserve to be in the top five but someone has to be left out.

A program can be measured in several ways but after living in another county growing up and being involved in their program and then moving to Bell years ago and watching Bell start their kids out at 5 years old and seeing 40 kids on the 5 and 6 year olds team that's what I call a great football program.

I don't really think Pikeville is a top 5 program anymore. They haven't really been significant on the state wide scene since the the late 90's and haven't had a state title appearance in 20 years. Can't hang your hat on titles in the late 80's for forever. I know this will tick a lot of Pikeville fans off , but its JMO.

I agree with the exception that I would rank Corbin over Pikeville. They have also won state championships and have maintained consistency dating back to the fifties.

I would be interested to see how many of Bell County's losses from 2000-2008 are from Rockcastle and vice-versa. The District and Regional Championship's would come much easier if these two never had to face each other.
Not that I am saying that Knox, McCreary, M.S. and others in the past have been pushovers, but these two teams have beaten each other up over the years.
Do you have those stats handy?
