Yeah, he and all the other UK haters will always find some way to twist this mess around to where it is Coach Cal's fault somehow...

Thing is, you take a risk with each player you sign. Whether that's golf, football, baseball, volleyball, basketball, tennis, etc. Each of the top collegiate coaches have had some encounter like this. It's not the coaches fault because their job is to coach their particular sport. It's the Athletic Director or someone close to him's fault for not finding this our before the athlete enrolls on campus.
In this particular situation, I'm sure Memphis's AD is taking the blame for it. I'm not too familiar with this case because I'm simply not worried about it because it does not effect UK at all. But with this being Cal's second player to have broken major NCAA rules then I'm sure majority of the blame will be directed his way when he had already said he had know idea this had occurred with Rose.

Guy's, do you really think Cal knew nothing? Honestly? Don't make me out to be the Cal hater - but seriously????

My thoughts exactly. He already has one final four vacated. Even though he may not be mentioned in any violations at UMass or Memphis, I do not think is totally innocent. Stories like this is why I wanted UK to go after Izzo.

Could suck for UK as the media pounces all over this. If anything comes to light that Cal had any acknowedgement of this, there will be a hailstorm of negative publicity surrounding Cal wherever he goes. That distraction would obviously carry over to the team, the school and the fans.

I have no opinion in this yet, ,

Not necessarily... UK has the ultimate trump card in the fact that the NCAA has went on record and announced he is not involved with this.
I agree that it is foolish for any UK fan to assume Cal is a perfect angel and this should curb their enthusiasm (alot of people think whn Cal picks his nose he gets diamonds instead of boogers).
But, for this particular case the spin is very easy. NCAA has cleared him, and all the allegations that Cal is to blame has came from Geoff Calkins of the Memphis Commercial Appeal who has throughout the entire Cal to UK transition has came across as merely jealous and bitter (he went from a Calipari drone to his biggest enemy).

Let me ask you all this, why is all this Derrick Rose stuff coming out this year? Cal stayed on another season after Rose had left for the NBA. He didn't skip town after Rose's career at Memphis ended. Now that Calipari has accepted the UK job all these things from Memphis are just now being reported to the NCAA.
Doesn't make much sense to me.

Even though I understand why people say that it is under the coach's responsibilities to monitor these kind of things, how in the world is the coach suppose to be in the room with the player 24/7. The NCAA clearing house cleared Rose and as far as I am concerned, that it what Cal went by (that Rose was legal and completely cleared). People can bash Cal and they may not let him in to the hall of fame but he is not at fault in the Camby situation or the Rose situation. UMass and the University of Memphis should have been able to monitor the situation along with the NCAA. Cal will go about his business and cut down nets here at UK.

If it's Mihael Porter, a coach may not be monitoring everything they do. If it's Derrick Rose, I guarentee there was someone who knew what he was doing.
UK was very involved in Darius Miller (I know from experience), and he was hardly the caliber of "red flag" that a Rose would be.....

All Memphis's case hinges on is that a handwriting experts says that maybe Rose didn't take the test, she can't be sure. How in the world is it Coach Cal's fault that wherever Rose took his Sat's that he was there or aware of his actions. The person in charge of giving the tests are responsible for matching the person up with their id before they take their test. He took it, the NCAA validated it, and he acted in good faith in playing him. Until these students start getting repercussion's for their actions they don't give a rat's tail about what happens after they leave, just like Marcus Camby taking gifts. I guess that's Cal's fault too? He should be able to monitor everything at every given time. If you guys believe that, I've got some swampland in Florida I'd like to sell you.

You obviously have no idea of what these coaches DO know! This is'nt about where this kid ate lunch on December 5th, 2002 - This is about the biggest known hurdle that this kid had to making the Memphis program an NCAA champsionship caliber team. C'mon, a student who does very poorly in school, who has proven that he tests extremely poorly, you think his college coach does not know the exact time, date, location, etc... Hey, I have some oceanview property for you up here in Cold Spring...... :eyeroll:

So you are suggesting that Coach Cal knew that Rose had a stand in to take the test and the he was aware of every waking minute that Derek Rose was at Memphis?

Nope, replying to the previous posters comments that coaches don't know everything about their players. Take it as you will, but if BCG knew when, where and what time Darius Miller was taking his ACT, my guess is Cal knew when Rose was taking his.

Be nice there Dusty:please: if he was aware, I think they should throw the book at him, and I am not aware of Rose's high school scores, but I do know that the NCAA is not pointing a finger at him, and I do know they validated him to play, and as for UMASS, I highly doubt he knew he was taking gifts.hh:

Taking two NCAA final four appearances off of his legacy sure can't look good. Let's not forget that the person who arranged use of the Memphis carhter plane and approved it was coach Cal. Did no one on his staff have the foresight to do the follow-up to ensure that Derrick Rose's bother ever paid the money back, or was there some agreement that he would never have to pay it ever..... hmmm, that would be an NCAA violation.
Hey, I love UK basketball. I hope he puts the banners in the rafters.
But just like at home, it my children do something wrong, is it not the responsibility of the parents to hold them accountable in the public and even legally? To your post before, let's hold the students accountable, just like our children. But just like our lives, we ultimately are responsible for their actions......

If Rick Pitino had this happen while he was the coach at Louisville, there would the same comments made by UK fans.

Kentucky will be in trouble before long with this guy coaching.

Regardless of what anyone says, Coach Cal has always reminded me of Pete Bell from the movie Blue Chips.

Coach Cal has already been told by the NCAA that he isn't a target and is clear of any wrongdoing.
08-20-2009, 11:03 PM
Well, Memphis DID have to vacate the Final Four, but I'm left wondering - Why is this Memphis' fault?
Isn't the NCAA clearinghouse supposed to verify a player's grades and test scores? If so, why is it Memphis' fault?
