Most defiantly Austin McKinney. He has over 300 career tackles at Prestonsburg including 177 last season.

He is being recruited by Wake Forest as a safety.

This kid is a nut. I watched him last year. And the kid never misses a tackle.

He plays linebacker for Prestonsburg, but he is being recruited as a safety because he is not physically big enough to play linebacker in college.

Wow. He plays a lot bigger than his size. I guess this is what makes him look so good.

That's what BlackcatAlum said. And I wouldn't doubt it if they were. The kid is a great athlete.
That is great!

Oct. 2 Matewan WV. Away --- W
Oct. 9 Morgan Co. Home --- W
Oct. 16 Open
Oct. 23 Shelby Valley Home --- W
Oct. 30 Pike Central Home --- W

A pretty challenging schedule for the Blackcats in 2009. I see a 7-3 record to cap off the regular season only losing one game at home to Belfry in the opener.

Prestonsburg should win the district once again and pending on their opponent in round three of the playoffs, the Blackcats should win 9 or 10 games next season.

Good luck boys!
I can agree with losses to Belfry & Breathitt, but I think we can take Sheldon Clark.

I totally agree with you on this one. This schedule will get them ready for the playoffs.

Should be a close and exciting game at Inez.

I hope I can make it to that one. I haven't even seen Sheldon Clark's field since they redone it.
OMG sheldon clark will make an exsample out of pburg
Who is going to be snapping the ball for P-burg this year? They will miss Bragg. I don't think I ever saw him muff a snap or completely miss a block.

That I do not know.
I heard its going to be Alex Griffith.
Good question about the center for 2009.

There are a lot of question marks on the offensive and defensive lines. Alex Garner is the only true linemen with any real varsity time that is returning. Griffith is more of a linebacker than a linemen.

It really is going to be interesting to see how Coach DeRossett handles things. This may be one of the smallest team's that Coach DeRosset has had in his tenure at Prestonsburg.

I still see at least 9 or 10 wins from the Blackcats though.
John Derossett hasn't had any real big linemen since the '06 season. Since then each linemen have been very quick and strong although they don't look it. Plus the past two season with small/quick linemen the Blackcats went 20-6.

Prestonsburg's usual smashmouth game will not be nearly as successful this up-coming season as in the past because of the lack of size up-front. But they will be able to hold their blocks out of the shotgun formation because they can spread the field and get more 1-on-1 blocks. When teams blitz the offense Prestonsburg has done a great job making defenses bite on draws, play action, and bootleg passes.

Prestonsburg defense will still be strong this upcoming season as they will be extremely fast. And as long as Alex Garner stays healthy he will be a beast at nose-tackle.
Alex Griffin would be a solid choice. Not huge, but has quuick feet, smart, and has decent speed to reach a linebacker if needed.
He's at 6'2 223 right now. Pretty big when compared to Prestonsburg's recent linemen...

However, he is still getting looks in the backfield and at TE.

There is a decent crop of young big lineman. They just lack experience...
He has grown quite a bit since I last saw him. His dad was a pretty tough lineman in his day. Maybe the gentics has kicked in. Hope he ends up at center. In my opinion, the one place where you can't afford to make mistakes.

Very good points.

Shotgun will be a primary offensive set for the Blackcats this year, something Michael Burchett isn't used to. The reason Burchett will be successful in shotgun is because he is a pocket quarterback. He has very good awareness and that will be of help to him this year more than ever.

The defense will be just as good as last season IMO. Sure, the Blackcats lost size, but the speed is still there and will be improved. You are right about Garner too, he will do a fine job anchoring the d-line.
Are you guys sure Prestonsburg will be good enough to have a 7-3 record?

They lost the heart and soul of their team graduating Craynon, Setser, Gearheart, Trout, and others. I don't see how they can replace them with next year's talent. Michael Burchett, Josh Craynon, Austin McKinney, and Joseph Jamerson are the only reliable players returning.

How is the running back situation doing this summer? I really don't see how Setser and Craynon will be replaced. I mean, where is this size? I thought Prestonsburg was small last year. Next season they will be even smaller. I hate to be cirtical, but I just don't see the Blackcats doing much better than .500 next season.

Shelby Valley even came close to beating Prestonsburg last season, so that could be a game to look out for. I understand Shelby Valley has a new coach, but it's just another questionable game in my opinion.

I'll predict a 5-5 finish to the regular season and a district championship.

Once again, good luck to the Blackcats.
