Numbers?
#1
A subject that weighs on my mind that I am finally going to get off of my chest is numbers in schools and football..There is no reason that almost every boy in school should not come out for football. Especially in the mountains. There's nothing else to do around here, so why not man up and play sports. Time to meet friends, make memories, fight together and cry together. I don't care what size the school it is, COME OUT AND PLAY FOOTBALL! IF there is a school the size of Jenkins or the size of LCC, at least 75% of the boys should come out and quit letting everyone else down that are depending on you. Get off of your 4 wheeler, quit being a punk and causing trouble, get off the XBOX or PS, quit driving your truck or car around and learn life lessons that you will never experience anywhere else!

Great post PB5....a lot of kids are either too lazy, lack discipline or have been hyped up by parents or coaches (of other sports) that they are going to be the next big basketball star or something. I great up loving baseball, it was my first passion...but I would give up all those games I played to go back and have one more year of high school football. I eventually went on to college and played both baseball and football, but there is nothing like playing under the lights of Friday night!

Well said, but allot of kids do not have the bennefits that others have or the backing...I've often thought how can we get these talented kids out to play, lets say transportation some just can't get out of the hollers or grades lets say they get 1 college credit for participating in school functions, although the student needs to meet criteria.

Hey heres one, the largest high school in Kentucky Scott Co. is lucky to have 80 kids come out to play football. Now this is a 6A school IMO they should have at least 150 kids dress....But honestly in Eastern Ky. I believe that a lot of kids just don't have the backing and transportation to get to after school funtions. I wonder if there would be some type of grant for these unfortunate kids?

or we dont desire the sport anymore or we dont like playing it........ever think about that, besides some of us non players are at every game being it volleyball, softball, baseball, basketball, girls b-ball, and football so its not about being lazy

That is a good post... I went to Perry Co. Central, Leslie CO, and Hazard High school... When i went to PCC there was over 1500 kids in the school, 900 of them was FR... There was only 32 kids come out to play football. That is bad that a little school like Hazard have more kids to come out and play football then a 5A school... Hazard only got 350 kids...

The lack of numbers is nothing new. Pull out old yearbooks and you will see pretty much the same. Football is an attitude. You can be huge, but if you don't have the desire, it doesn't matter. I would love to see the numbers double at every school in the mountains, but it's not going to happen,

Complete Non-Sense. I want my kids to be lawyers or doctors and make millions of dollars, but if they have zero interest, then me wanting them to go do what i want them to do will result in lack of effort and no desire. Let's make kids PLAY football. Give me 40 kids who WANT to play, and the 60 who NO DESIRE to be there off to their quads or XBOX! I want motivated athletes, not kids who are FORCED. That reasoning makes no sense what so ever!

Totally not the point I was making..I would MUCH rather have my kids play sports than to sit on there tails munching and playing video games...In no way did "I FORCE THEM TO COME OUT AND PLAY? No clue what your post is trying to entitle?

Another thing that hurts numbers is TROPHIES. Kids get a trophy for showing up, and by the time they are old enough to start football, the kid and his entire family think he is a superstar, because look at all the trophies. When he doesn't start, or doesn't play, well the coach is stupid or has it in for the kid. The kid quits to use his talent elsewhere like drawing a SSI check, and playing video games all day while on homebound instruction.

I agree with PB5 with the whole point of getting BOYS out to play. There is this to consider, (and don't kill me guys... because I am a football fan thru&thru...) there is more than football to be played in the Fall. Cross Country, Golf, and Soccer are all wonderful activities for the young men of our area and scholarships go unclaimed in these sports every year. Idle hands are ..... & getting Boys involved in SOMETHING that requires them to be motivated enough to show up, learn how to work hard & acheive goals and to experience self discipline are life lessons(self confidence & esteem builders) that nothing else can illicit... not to mention the comraderie and memories shared for a lifetime.

i am with you,if there only 20 that wants to play, play them ,dont need to take up space for no lazy ness, lazy will get you hurt in football.

To be honest, i only played football because i had gotten to muscular to be aby good at track/soccer/or cross country my sophmore year. Now i love the sport and wouldnt trade all those sports and the others i do for one game on the football field, even if i just at on the side line. This sport must be the ultimate sport for teaching and learning true sportsmanship, teamwork, and overall dedication if your team is to succeed at all. i however think the message of PB5's post is to try and get kids to see the true meaning of football, by trying it, over the other useless things such as games, 4wheelers, or whatever they may be doing. The truth is most kids wont even try the game of football, some are too lazy, some just dont have the desire, some arent atheletic enough, some scared, etc.

BUT, it doesnt take 50+ kids to win a championship, it doesnt take fancy uniforms, huge booster clubs, community support, or a turf field. when it comes down to it, it only takes a few guys who love the sport and want to win so bad that they know it will eat their hearts for weeks to come after a loss.

As a wise man once said, its not the size of the stick, but how you use it.

I didn't play football during my high school days. I think what if, just about everytime this type of discussion comes up or when I speak with some of the guys that did play or the ones that do play. I played from 4th grade through 8th grade, but I just didn't do it in high school and thought that spending time with my friends was more important because none of my closer friends played football. I'm not saying I would trade those spring/summer days that I spent with my friends in for football, but I know that I wasted a lot of my time doing nothing when I could have been out there with those guys when they made a deep run into the playoffs or just took a trip to Pond Creek to face the Pirates of Belfry. I regret it I really do!

Now I plan on coaching either football or basketball and being an inspiration to some of the boys that don't play football. I really think that I can talk some of them into playing football rather than going out and partying and doing drugs or simply just playing video games all day.

I agree with every post in this thread, there is really no excuse for not coming out and at least giving it a shot.

Laziness kills more people than anything else. Many reasons are given for not playing. Most are not very good ones: "don't have a ride", "I gotta work", and the list goes on.
It takes a special type of person to play this sport. You have to be physically and mentally tough. You have to be willing to make sacrifices for the betterment of the team. I'm not meaning injure yourself, but socially sacrifice things (ex. videogames, hanging out and wasting time, dating and allowing your significant other to tell you you can't play, etc.). It is in many ways like the military, except more laid back and you get to go home every day.

Sitting in the stands cheering is in no comparison to getting off your lazy butt and actually playing the game. This is one of the worst excuses I have heard for not playing. Did you know that somewhere between 70% and 80 % of the highest ranking officers in the military either played high school or college football. Anyone who does not play needs to man up and go out. suck it up, and play. Simple as that.

didnt say anywhere that it was like playing....just saying some of us are not as lazy as you think at least some of us are involced with sports instead of doing drugs and causing trouble.
Sure if you have nothing to do might as well do somthing you dont want to.

ya know you should bungee jump it was really fun. anyone who has'nt needs to man up and do it. suck it up, and jump simple as that

I think, "I don't have a ride is 90% an excuse than anything...Someone that you know, SOMEONE can take you to practice as someone or any kind of coach would make sure you get too and from practice, IMO!

Tom Duffy won many, many state titles with 25 to 30 players ever year. I would much rather have quality instead of quantity. Playboy5 I do agreee with you, parents are allowing kids to be LAZY. Is this why the Mexican are taking over the U.S.? Is this the reason that U.S is so over weight?
#29
And by no means, did I just mean playing football..I meant for kids to just get out and do something. I am not talking about numbers just to make it look like a football team and that seems to be my fault since I didn't explain it into more detail than I did. Drugs is such a problem in the nation and especially here in Eastern Kentucky and I honestly think sports is an answer. Sports treats you so many different aspects of life and actually makes you work toward something instead of not doing anything. Alot of kids, even some that do play sports (remind you) are 100% acceptable to drawing a check like most of there parents do around here, because they have never had to do anything as people like me and others pay for them to sit at home and buy drugs with the money that we work for. Playing sports again, teaches you alot about life IMO!

I have been bungee jumping, skydiving, and I have even been swimming with sharks in the ocean, so I did jump. It looks like you are the one with your feet plantied firmly on the lazy ground. Just play and quit talking.
