I'm guessing due to the flooding.
05-10-2009, 04:47 PM
No surprise theres no school. Got any news on Floyd and Johnson County's?
05-10-2009, 06:07 PM
I wonder if this day will have to be made up?
05-10-2009, 06:20 PM
^Why wouldn't it?

jetpilot Wrote:^Why wouldn't it?
Because Pike CO was already excused for some of the days they missed and you would figure this would go along with it considering they probably didn't plan on missing any more.
05-10-2009, 06:57 PM
^I wouldn't figure that. Too many missed days already.

Well, considering the entire state is under a state of emergency and Pike county has been declared a disaster area..... They should be exempt from this school day. I do believe that the President has more power than the state when it comes to deciding the factors concerning the devastation here in this area. HOW can you get to school when there is no road to run the bus? When there is no water to fix them food to eat? No clothes for the kids to wear as they have lost everything? People need to show some compassion to the loss instead of worrying about things that can be fixed later on like the CATS test or a few school days!!!

Aren't the days after CATS testing just like a big recess for elementary and middle schoolers anyway? No real need to make them up.

Wouldn't hurt a bit to make it up after the disaster is over. In fact it would help...always amazed how students AND GROWNUPS don't mind a bit missing a bunch of school. More days of school = better educated students and it is really as simple as that. No excuses - make up missed school days.

Shew this would happen the days that us seniors get to miss school.
LOL.
but it's nothing to fuss about; it's something that is out of our hands.
It doesn't matter to me if we make it up or not.
But seriously, why would they make it up??

Because they are supposed to be giving their students the best possible education? So their students wouldn't be behind all the other students who went to school every day?

Floyd County is closed on Monday as well.
Not sure about Johnson County.

Behind on their education?
If they haven't recieved their education by now, especially since CATS testing is going on, then I don't see them learning anymore this year anyways. It's not like they do anything after testing anyways.

You are supposed to go to school a certain number of days. If you want to call off school for X amount of days, that is fine by me. BUT, you must make up X amount of days. It is what is right and fair and I have absolutely no clue why people can't see how simple that is.

So basically, your saying even though this is an ACT OF GOD, the children, community, and yes, school officials are responsible for it. Granted, yes the children need to attend school the amount of days required by the state department BUT situtations like this ARE NOT factored in when the decisions are made concerning school attendance. Well, I tell you all what...... why don't you come over to this area of the community, get your shovels, fix all the roads so the buses, or for that matter vehicles can pass thru, send about OH..... $200.00 per child who now has nothing so that they can get a couple of good outfits to finish out the school year in, bring yourselves right on out to the schools on a daily basis and make sure each and every child has a healthy meal prepared, and give them a couple of dollars out of your pocket so that they can purchase them a small snack to eat before they get home. Fixing the problem is not going to be so easy. Who knows where you live but I promise, it is bad in parts of the county. VERY bad and there is NO WAY that schools can get the recommended amount of children there to account for their attendance and get the money for that! They will LOSE more money trying to educate your child than they will get back to put in for the next years educational purposes. Funding.... yes, it comes from attendance!! Poor attendance=no cash..... High attendance=funding for needed educational materials for schools and children. Figure it out if you can..... there is NO quick fix!!!!

Just make up the days after the water goes down. It can be done.

Well, I've tried to be nice but evidently you have NO concept of what I'm trying to say.... The water has went down BUT---- YOU would like for us to send the children into muddy, disease infested schools, naked without clothing, and no homes to bath in OR even do their homework. Send them out of the Red Cross shelters evidently?? OH, I forgot.. Belfry High School IS the Red Cross Shelter for this area. Please, get out of Pikeville and look at what the rest of the county has endured before you make your comments. NO one said that school couldn't be made up AT A LATER DATE but you act as if they should go right on back tomorrow. I'm attaching a photo of the roadway (well, used to be) above my home. You wanna come and drive the bus up the hollow and get the kids???? GEEZ!!!!!

In my original post I said make up the days "after the disaster is over." GEEZ!
And where were you trying to be nice? I must have missed that post! And quit putting words in my mouth that I didn't say.
Real simple. Clean up mess. Make up days missed.

Real simple. They are working on Belfry Middle as I type.... Why not run on over and help them out so the kid's can get back to school and you won't have to miss a nights sleep over it!

No it is not "real simple" to make up the days "after the disaster is over"...my daughter is scheduled to graduate from Belfry on May the 29th...with all the devastation this area has seen, she will be well into her college classes by the time the roads/bridges are fixed...not to mention homes that will have to be repaired/rebuilt. What is she/other kids going away to college supposed to do, leave college to make up the last 2 weeks of high school they missed?
If you have not seen the destruction people have experienced due to this flood...hop in your car and drive over this way. I have lived here all my life and neither the floods of 1977 or 1984 flooded the area in which I live...

The Pike County BOE should just close school down for the rest of the year.

Can;t do that, some HS students are probably relying on a final exam to pass a class.

Thank you for this post!!! I have been trying to make the poster understand but evidently they have not been over in this area. I can remember the 77 flood as well, which people KNEW was coming. This one came on quick. It's unbelieveable at the damage to so many homes, roads, businesses, SCHOOLS, and lives in general. I pray that everyone is safe and they receive the help and assistance they need to partially re-gain their lives.
