Toss up between Ryan Kelly of SCHS and Ivan Lee of Belfry.

Since I'm a Corbin fan, I'll liken him to a poor man's Jarrod Lawson. I don't know if he had the strength but they are very similar.
Channing Fugate is above and beyond Jarrod Lawson and whoever said it takes 10 yards for him to get started isn't out their playing the game and seeing him coming at you. Just because they run a zone scheme and he picks a hole and then explodes doesn't mean he doesn't start out fast. He is also 6'2 220. I take Fugate as a RB/LB/TE/S any day of the week on any team.

Lawson was 6'2" 235 Mr. Football runner up to Brohm. Went to UK, would have been starting FB as a true freshman according to Brooks during the midseason had Jarrod not redshirted. He had over 2700 yards and 30 some touchdowns. Fugate is good but above and beyond Jarrod Lawson, he is not.

Why wasn't he the starting FB after his redshirt?
I have seen both play and you really can't compare them, it is apples to oranges. Lawson was a horse, his goal was to hit the hole hard, run North to South, and get yards from broken tackles.
Fugate is asked to make plays laterally, between the tackles, and catching the football. Fugate has the physicality to break tackles, but his yards come from finding the correct hole and making plays in the open field.

Unfortunately Jarrod suffered a severe knee injury during the off season and it cut his college days short.

That's a shame.. he was a tough-nosed kid and it would not have shocked me to seen him on the field at UK.

Channing Fugate

I think Lawson walked on at UK, and I am not saying he was a bad player, but I don't think that is a very good comparison to Channing.

What about Ben Benedict?

This question will be decided after the HS season is over and once the colleges make their choice. Which may come as a surprise to all.

Fugate, Thomas Varney, Ryan Kelley, just to name a few.

crowder may not be the best but he has run over some guys and he just got past the 1000 yard rushing mark on the year

It's hard to judge backs until they play against great competition. We have played Bell the past two years and IMO Greer is the best back we have faced. We have played Middlesboro, Rockcastle, and Perry Central and all three backs: Hunter Hayes and #23 are all good, but not the same league as Greer. IMO powers should be on that list?

Watkins on the other hand, seems to be the total package. He has unbelievable strength and quickness. He also has another gear in the speed department. I think Watkins would be the better college prospect between the two. Don't get me wrong, a coach wouldn't have any room to complain with either of them.
That's an insult to Fugate considering how we shut Lawson down in that record setting whippin we gave Corbin in Louisville in 2002.Lawson showed me nothing?Where is he now if he was sooooo great?

Fugate didn't play against Lawson in 2002. If I am not mistaken I think he was comparing Fugate to Lawson. Not to mention he has already said that Fugate was a super athlete.

Jesse Rose (Powell County) just a sophmore and still and hard runner.

Daniel Harmon of Pikeville is the best I've seen the last couple of years.

From what I have been told, Channing went last year to a senior camp that UK had but that has been it. Noone has contacted the coaches or his parents from either school. But you also said that the Hazard/ JCHS game would be a game lol. Just joking around man.
That was before i know that one boy was back. The coaches didn't do nothing to. They just let him come back. The other players got made over that. They play that way. I didn't go to that game. I went to Breathitt/LCA game that night. If Channing want to sit on the sideline, he go to Kentucky. But if he want to play he pick a team from Conference USA or Mid-American.

That is a nice accomplishment!

Nice to see Kentucky actually getting some recognition, much better seeing it in the Mountains. I don't think Kentucky is in much of a Mid-Westernly Region though.
11-05-2008, 11:54 PM
I cant remember any other EKY running back getting some coverage from ESPN! That should say enough about who the best is shouldnt it?
11-06-2008, 01:32 AM
Actually, ESPN just recently started in depth coverage of High School football, but its a nice accomplishment no matter how you put it.
If Pikeville had a better team, or Belfry's line, a lot more of you would know how special of a football player Daniel Harmon is. IMHO, he's been the best back in the mountains the past two years, and maybe three.

MatneysManiac Wrote:well, ive played against doderer since he played at central elementary lol and the guy is ballplayer against 1a competition but c'mon, there isnt a fair way you can say he is better than dillon and richardson when he doesn have the stats they have and he is playing alot easier competition, guys let's discuss facts, not opinions
First off, this can only be discussed as oppinions!
Prestonsburg, Raceland and Johnson Central are not exactly cupcakes. Dodderer gets hit in the backfield 60% of the time. Chase and Nathan have the luxury of getting a 10 yard head of steam going befor they even see a defender. Heck...I could get a hundred yards a game behind JC's line. And trust me when I say it ain't easy for me to admit that their line is as good as they are. or the whole team for that matter.
We all know that even a decent back could run for 2000 yards behind them. A good back could easily get 3000+.
11-06-2008, 03:30 PM
So what I'm trying to figure out is this, are Richardson and Dillon good backs or just have the luxury of running behind a dominate line??

That is an outstanding accomplishment. I always like seeing KY kids getting some much needed national attention. The only thing that I hate is that he put up those numbers against the Eagles. It would have been nice reading the article not seeing our name on the losing side. But seriously we have a very nice back in Hayden, but the Fugate kid is on a different level. I haven't had the opportunity to watch many other mountain backs, but Fugate truly impressed me. After their quarterback got hurt we knew what they were going to do, but we could not stop him. Hats of to him and the Bobcats, Holcomb runs a class program!

LOL I guess everything he posts on here are "facts" All three of those guys are good backs, but I would hate to see how scary JC would have been if Doderer would have stayed in the county school system

what bout jostan helton from magoffin co. he has 927 rushing yards so far this season

2 more names I wanna throw out and get some feedback on, BJ Roberts and Andrew Link

I've coached against Lee, Varney, Sester, Cranyon, Kelley, Harmon etc. They are all great backs but it is Fugate then everybody else in my opinion. He is like watching the kid that is so much bigger, faster and uses all his weapons in a youth football game. He is one of the better backs in the state IMO! What is he like 6'2ish 230ish?
