Ken Griffey Jr. has been traded to the White Sox this morning. Both teams have agreed on the deal and await Griffey's approval. It has not been mentioned what the Reds will get in return.

I really didnt see this one coming. Here lately they were talking about Adam Dunn being traded.

Adam Dunn is being talked about as well. The Devil Rays have him as their 2nd option behind Jason Bay of the Pirates. As of now, it looks as if Bay will be going to the Red Sox or Marlins.
The Reds are getting 2 players in return for Griffey that I have never heard of.

On ESPN.com it says that they will recieve relieving pitcher Nick Masset and 2nd Baseman Danny Richar.
Here's a link to their stats:Nick Masset
Danny Richar
I don'y know why they would want another 2nd baseman, it justs boggles my mind. Also, Nick Masset ERA pitching this year is 4.36! I know that Jr. wouldn't be back after this season and we had to get something for him, but I'm sure there was a better deal than this out there!!

Well, I didnt see this coming either but I hope Dunn stays in Cincy and the renew this contract for next season! If they trade Dunn along with Griffey where are the runs gonna come from? Dunn is the NL leader for HRs (32) I hope the "Big Donkey" stays!

I'm torn between trading Dunn and keeping him. It would free up more money if Cincy got rid of him, but would also cut back on the runs they score. I think they should cut Arroyo though because he is eating up a ton of money, sign Dunn back, and find some nice leadoff type players. You have Dunn who can hit the HR, Phillips who can hit the HR, but no one that can stay healthy can hit a consistent .300. I say you have Hairston lead off when he gets back in the lineup, put Phillips as the 2, Dunn as the 3, Encarnacion as the 4, Votto/Bruce/Keppinger at 5/6/7 in any order, the catcher at 8, and pitcher at 9. You have to move Dunn from the 5 hole because all of these HR's he's hitting are not driving in any runs due to the fact no one is on base whenever he's up to the plate. Phillips swings for the fence every time he's up to bat, and Griffey was the same. At least with putting Phillips in the 2 hole, you can give Dunn the opportunity to bat in the 1st with the leadoff hitter on base.
Now for the rest of this year, I'd go out and pick up Kenny Lofton who is a FA, and sign him for the remainder of the year. Kenny would be a great leadoff hitter, and he is still a threat to steal a base. That is just my opinion on the whole thing.

While one might think so, I really think this probably was the best deal out there for Griffey. Granted, he can still hit the occasional home run, but he is making $12.5 million this year and his defense has taken a nosedive. Not to mention that he is 38 years old and a soon-to-be free agent. Honestly, I thought we'd be lucky to get a sack of baseballs for Junior. The only reason we are getting anything in return is that we are paying half the 4 million or so he is owed the rest of this year, as well as half the option buyout.

They can't just cut Arroyo to free up some money. This isn't the NFL, if you release an MLB player, you are still on the hook for the entire amount of their contract. Which, for Arroyo, involves the rest of this year plus the $24 million he is owed the next two seasons. So there is absolutlely no way that is happening. A trade is a possibility, but no one wants to give up very much for him due to that large contract. Barring an unexpectedly good offer, the Reds will be better off to just keep him and hope he straightens things out.

Dunn should not be traded!!! We could have used him instead of Josh Hamilton in the trade to the Rangers but we didnt. So by God we better keep him now if he was that important then.

Goodbye Griff...Hopefully, he'll find some peace. Have you ever seen a guy wanting fans approval from his hometown more than him? 1 winning season since he became a Red and that was the first season he was in uniform. This trade was a no-brainer. You're not gonna pick up his option, he's 38 and obviously unhappy (giving interviews earlier this year about his desire to go back to Seattle). I think it's just best for both parties. Good luck Griff and hopefully you'll win a WS.
More importantly, this shows the Reds want to go in a new direction. No fire sale because we didn't give up players like Weathers, Affeldt, Arroyo, Dunn for nothing. Let the young guys keep pitching, Bruce has a more natural home in RF now, and FINALLY someone productive will hit in the 3rd slot in the Reds lineup.

Wow, I just got home from two-a-days for football and I did not see this one coming. Why get a 2B when we already have Brandon Phillips? I don't know, I'm still trying to figure this one out.

It's about time the Reds parted ways with him. I don't understand why they traded him AND cash for the two guys we got in return though.

I know many people have said that before, but it's not that simple. The truth is the Rangers didn't want Dunn! Wayne Krivsky said that Texas came to the Reds specifically to ask about Josh Hamilton. It's not like they asked for Dunn and the Reds wanted to keep him so bad that they insisted on Hamilton instead.
Bottom line, the Reds couldn't have gotten Edinson Volquez for Adam Dunn. It just wasn't happening. You could argue that they shouldn't have given up Hamilton for Volquez, but that's a whole different thread...

I do think that the Reds should try to re-sign Dunn, though, depending on what his contract demands are. If they're too high, then see ya later.

JJ, I think this deal is good for both the Reds and Griffey. He gets a chance to be in a playoff race and have a shot at a ring. The Reds get to move on from the last few years and start a new, post-Griffey era.
I really think that both he and the fans share the blame for their relationship deteriorated. A bunch of knotheads around Cincinnati blamed him for all the Reds' shortcomings, and made it seem as though all the injuries were somehow his fault. Junior, on the other hand, lumped all the local fans together and made it seem as though the entire city had turned its back on him. In the end, the relationship was probably beyond repair, and it's best to just cut ties...

Junior is a great player. Hate to see him leave the Reds.

People, you have to understand that Griffey isn't Griffey anymore, It is reality. The whole point of the deal was to free up money for an overpaid player and found a team which shocked me to split the cost of Griffey's contract.
08-01-2008, 01:21 PM
Griffey is past his prime. If the Reds want to contend they need to do it with young talented players, not aging stars.
I like the move.

Griffey is nearing the end of his career anyway and I relaly look for him to take on a DH role in the American League. Also, I tend to think that AL pitching is beneath that of the NL so his stats might rise again and end on a high not. As for Dunn...I know he strikes out but his offensive stats are second to none. He has 32 HR, one of the top players as far as OB% goes and will consistently drive in 100+ every year....not to mention you need someone in your line-up that has a chance to yank it out of the park every time they make contact. I look for Harriston Jr. to move to CF and Bruce to right, which is his natural position. As far as the batting order is concerned, Encarnacion isn't a clean-up hitter....he is much better suited at the 5 hole. I think it will look like...
Hariston
Keppinger
Phillips (maybe 4, but I'd put him there just because he will always put the ball in play and you may need a sac fly early on)
Dunn
Encarnacion
Votto
Bruce
Bako/Ross
Pitcher
I hated to see Jr. gone because he is going to be in the h.o.f. in a few years...but this season is pretty much done for as far as the post-season goes...time to look to next year and developing our talent for years to come.

Weirdly enough 2 of my all time favorite players got traded being Griffey and Manny. Hate to see Jr. go, wished he would have finished his career in Cincy. But like said he is nearing the end of his career and wants nothing more than a ring and the White Sox are in contention right now so wish Jr. Griffey nothing but the best.
08-02-2008, 12:40 AM
I wish Griffey the best of luck on the rest of his career, he had 2 RBI's tonight in his debut. I thought we could have got a little more out of him but oh well, I was going to be ticked off if we also traded Adam though, that would have left us with nothing, I mean he is the leading home run hitter in MLB.

I've thought about this deal for a few days now and it still blows my mind. Hey, Kenny Williams, I have a broken washing machine that really is in need of some TLC, you interested? It would make a good addition to your clubhouse.
![Big Grin Big Grin](https://bluegrassrivals.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.png)
Anyway, the rumor apparently was that the Reds weren't shopping Junior around and the White Sox "suddenly" came calling late Wednesday evening with a "deal." I just don't buy it. Recent actions like Junior cussing out fans at GABP (which I saw btw while watching the game, he did it from the dugout after hitting an opposite field HR) and his scuffle with Jeff Brantley (who's an idiot) I think were the last straws. The management made it clear that they weren't going to pick-up his option and they wanted to see the team without him now rather than later to prepare for next season. GM Jocketty made a special trip this past week to Houston to try to "talk" with Griffey about his latest problems - I'm not buying that either. He came in preparation to what was to come and that was Junior re-locating.
Good luck to Junior. He released a statement smoothing things over with fans and such saying he only regrets not winning a WS in Cincinnati and that he got along with "most" of the media. Whatever. Goodbye Junior. Glad to see Bruce hitting 3rd now.
