Russell-Flatwoods blanks Grayson
Grabs District 6 softball title
By AARON SNYDER -- The Independent

ARGILLITE — The first inning said it all in the 11- and 12-year-old District 6 Softball Championship at Addington Baseball Complex in Argillite on Saturday night.

The Russell-Flatwoods All-Stars sent 29 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning against the Grayson All-Stars as Russell won the game, 31-0.

With the win, Russell advances to the state tournament which will take place in Flatwoods beginning Saturday, July 12.

The same group of girls won the state title two years ago in the 9- and 10-year-old age group.

“These girls just get along great and they are a good bunch of kids,” said Russell assistant coach Barry Powell. “They just click together. It makes it easy.”

The first nine Russell hitters reached base and scored a run. In her second time up, leadoff batter Madison Sparks lined out to first base for the first out.

Sparks batted four times in the inning and recorded four of her five total RBIs in the first frame.

Hannah Carter and Hope Parsley each drove in four runs in the inning on three at-bats apiece. Russell scored 25 times in the top of the first.

Russell pitching hardly needed such a comfortable cushion, though.

Sydney Whitt and Mallory Powell combined to throw a no-hitter and allowed just four total baserunners due to walks.

Whitt recorded three strikeouts and Powell fanned five Grayson batters.

Grayson pitcher Heather Withrow had a tough time with a talented Russell lineup, but she did her part at the plate by drawing two walks in two plate appearances.

Grayson began making solid contact with the ball in the final inning, but a good defensive play by Arden Gross at first base helped Powell get through the inning unharmed.

Gross also contributed offensively by scoring at least one run in each of the first three innings.

Savannah Peterman added four runs batted in for the Russell-Flatwoods All-Stars, who totaled 35 hits. They batted around a total of five times in becoming district champions.
