Now why didn't they move Allen Central or South Floyd over from Class A District 1-8 to District 1-7? I still don't like the 4 team districts. Doesn't really give someone must to play for in the regular season if they know they are guaranteed the playoffs.

Yeah for real. Its not as exciting. There's nothing to play for if the playloffs are a for sure.

East Carter goes to 4A and Fleming drops back to our district again.
Russell, Mason Co, Fleming Co, Lewis Co, and West Carter.
Tougher district if you ask me. I like it

That will make for a competitive district! Powell will benefit by having a 4 team district and being guaranteed a playoff spot.

Wow, Belfry only has a three game district schedule. That makes the Belfry/Sheldon Clark game huge for both teams....even more than it already is.

I heard that Johnson Central tried to move down to Class 4A... anyone know why?

I would guess it would be because of travel. That is a terrible district for away games.

I agree!
Mason Co is always athletic and Fleming Co is tougher than most programs when they have a good year.

Fleming has beat Russell twice??? Wasn't that in the same down year?

Travel wise it would make more sense to move Pikeville...

Class is based on enrollment...you cannot move down...

In the past you could ask to move up a class...not sure if this allowed now...

How is Mason a 3A not a 4A? Surley they are a bigger sccool than East Carter,Greenup or Rowan. Something isn't right.

I don't know,East usually beats West and Fleming don't they? Get West out and Bring back East that would make it tougher.

The RED DEVILS will still be the class of the district no matter how they do it.Big Grin

off topic but seeing Shelby Valley in 2a now wonder if they'll try and play in the all A in volleyball and basketball

East has not beat Fleming for a long time (1998). They were dominating the series with West, but West has won the last 2 games.

I was also surprised that Mason County did not move up to 4A. East Carter moved because they requested it, not because of the size of their school.
#17
The all A is based on enrollment in grades 10-12 or something.... completely different thing!
#18
That was like Whitesburg was 2A but competed in the all A in baseball, and basketball..

Yes Russell is a top the district now but Mason County will or should have athletic players year in and out and I really dont see Russell after this year being able to compete with that so watch for a change in who the top dog is in that districtWink

Well, every now and then you have a down year,,, if you are not a private school. But if your down year is being district runner up,,, well is that really bad??
I know the more you win, the more you are expected to win. People get dependent on winning. At Russell you are expected to win year in and year out. So we a product of our own environment.
People always say Russell does not rebuild they just reload. Well, we will see every year if that happens.

Yes Russell does reload but how can they reload when they have no ammo left, im not saying that Russell is going down the drain cause there far from that but I just see them being in the middle of that dictrict for a coulpe years to come but I say old Ivan will scrap up some ammo somewere

I hope their not down to bad next year, the do have to play Ironton.

Actually, these classifications only apply to football. The state does not officially sanction any sort of alignment by size for any other sports, including basketball. The All-A Classic is an independently run event, and as such they make their own determination of what they consider to be class A. As was mentioned earlier, their guidelines only include grades 10-12.

Incidentally, this is not new for Shelby Valley to be in class 2A. The only year they have ever competed in 1A in football was the first year of the school, ever since they have been in a higher classification. However, dwindling enrollment in recent years has allowed them to make the cutoff point for the All-A basketball tournament.

I wish they would have put Jackson in Powell's district. That would make 3-6 & 3-5 have 5 teams per conference. That way you would have to win to make the playoffs. I come from WV and the playoff picture over there makes you win to make the playoffs. You adopt a points system and teams are ranked. At the end, the top 16 teams are in. Some teams win 6 or 7 games and still don't get in. Usually, the end result is the same but bad teams don't get to say they made the playoffs, when they only had a win or two to get in. I mean shoot, some teams can get in and not even win a game. Somebody tell me "Why"! We have a watered down playoffs.

What says powell wont make it anyway? They have before. I dont see the benefit unless your off schedule is very strong and would prepare you for whoever you meet that has earned their way in. It would be nice to see them go back to the top 2 teams going but wont happen because the money situation.

I did not mean that they could not make it. I was just saying that with a new coach building a team, it could help by not having to worry about earning that 11th game. This way they know they are in and they can focus on other things. I do not like 4 team districts in all cases, but in this case I would.

Breathitt has to ahve one of the weakest districts in the state....They are doing a better job at scheduling tougher non-district opponants, and from the looks of the alignment, they will have to depend on the non-district teams to prepare them for the play-offs because that district is weak.

They still allow teams to play up a Class if they choose. Both Highlands and Cov. Cath have a 3A enrollment but asked to play up for geographical reasons.
