56th District
#1
1. Estill (returning champs...lost a key player in christopher)
2. Powell (Great defensive squad)
3. Lee ( Returning arguable the best player in district Aaron Charles)
4. Owsley ( upcoming young team...cant underestimate them)
#2
Owsley should have the best pair of guards in the district in juniors Nick Noble and Devan Evans. Don't know much about the rest of their team, they lose a lot of seniors this year.

Lee has Pelfrey and Charles back, and that's enough to make them competitive.

Cackling, MVP in the 56th tournament, is back for Estill.

Powell lost a lot of talent. I would place them 4th in the district next year as they are going to have some rebuilding to do.

Estill returns 4 that started most of the year

Estill is top returning team in district, with Lee 2nd!
#5
Estill will be the top team in the district this year. With maybe Lee, and then Powell. Owsley will finish last, IMO. It will be a competitive district. Best of luck to all the teams.
#6
(1) Estill Co
(2) Lee Co
(3)Owsley Co
(4) Powell Co

IMO
#7
I wouldnt underestemate the Owls, they may have lost a lot this year, but they have a decent bench full of talent, that are more than ready to step up and shine. Nick Noble and Devin Evans, not to mention Senior Zack Taylor... The only real difference is that they might be one or two ball-hogs less in the Owls Nest this upcoming season.
#8
i picked them 3rd cant see them doing any better will be weak inside after losing there center but i wish them good luck.

Looks like what I thought !
Estill will be strong though they will miss christopher.
Lee brings back just about everybody and adds a couple familiar names to the roster.
Owsley good backcourt but shallow up front, Salyers from Jackson will provide help
Powell Loses top scorer and more in Kinser not terrible team but a hair below Owsley
#11
Is Salyer for sure coming to Owsley next year?
#12
I Completely Agree With You One&onlybrain, Owsley Will Be Alot Better Than Most Of You Are Thinking, This Group Of Boys Will Be Contenders In The 56th District!!!! So Go Ahead Under Estimate Them All You Want That Will Just Make Them Work Even Harder To Prove You Wrong!!!!
#13
with coach tiller and estill finally getting settled in, in the 14th, i see alot of young talent, and complete domination of the 14th in there future
#14
Estill returns most of their starters right? If this is correct then I believe they might as well take the #1 seed. They had a great team last year and I'm sure Coach Tiller will have them ready again next season. Lee lost a great PG in Drake. He always kept the team going. Powell has a great defensive squad coming back. Losing 4 starters but Coach Lively has some great talent on the bench. There will be a few new comers on the bench next year for the Pirates. As for Owsley, I couldn't tell you much. I really don't know much about them. Evans will carry the team for most of the year.
#15
estill, no doubt. if powell is healthy they can be dangerous, christian brewer is lethal when he gets hot. crowe and hawkins will be 2 and 3 spot. probably arvin and rice down low. if they play team basketball estill watch out so does everyone else.

I think it will be a battle for the 3 spot. Between Powell and Owsley. If Powell plays together, they might even be able to snatch the 2 spot. I think Estill will be to much.

Where did you hear this? Who is Salyers? How tall is he? Can he play? And, most importantly, will he be eligible?

Not sure about where Salyers will be playing, but he is about 6'5" and a decent post player. He was ruled ineligible this season at Jackson Independent after transferring from Breathitt County at the beginning of this year... (I think I'm right about all that...)

Since he did sit out this year, would he pretty much be ruled eligible to play at any KHSAA school next season? Can anyone think of a scenario where he would be ruled ineligible again next year?
#19
I think he will be eligible to play any where he wishes this season after sitting out this past season, some people are saying that he will be at Owsley next year but I dont know if that is true or just rumor.

I agree with you. But does anyone know of an instance where a kid was ruled ineligible for two consecutive seasons....even if there were multiple transfers involved?

In other words, even if a kid who has transferred from school "A" to school "B" and ruled ineligible, then during his period of ineligibility he transfers to school "C"....and even then to school "D", I think that he would still be eligible the following season. As long as he did not participate in any high school sport at any level during his period of ineligibility.

Any thoughts?

Well it all depends on if there is a move or if he is just transferring. I am not sure on the exact rule with that, but I know of a kid that transferred to 3 different schools in 3 years, and was eligible every single year and played every single year. He ended up going to 3 different high schools in 4 years.
#22
I hope that Salyers does come to the Owls nest, Timmy Murrell and Salyers will be a great combo inside then they will have Zack Taylor, Nick Noble Devin Evans rounding out the starting five, with Tyler Williams and Jordan Hardy and a host of others coming off the bench. I think that the 56th will be very interesting in 08/09!!!!
#23
Who will take the district and what will it take to win it?
#24
56th should be between Lee and Estill. Two of the best players in the 14th in Cackling (Estill) and Charles (Lee). I think that it is played at Estill this year.

It will take REBOUNDING and smart coaching to win it. Lee has a definite advantage in size with a probably starting lineup averaging 6'4".

Lee also has to overcome their 'first round curse' after having lost to Owsley (at Owsley) in the first round two years ago AND losing to Powell (at Powell) in the first round last season.

Estill County has a quality team. Wiseman, Hoover and Roberts will add to Cackling's skill to take a lot of teams by surprise this year.

Having said all that, the Lee County boys are happy with their new team-mate from Atlanta, high-flying 6'5" sophomore Dontarius Pittman. "D" will help the Bobcats all around and especially in the rebounding/shot-blocking department. This should push Lee County to a 56th District title.
#25
If I'm not mistaken Estill County will host the district tournament this year, their first turn since joining the 56th in 2005-06 school year. That will give them a home court advantage, but I agree that Lee County will be very difficult to knock off this year. I see the Bobcats making it to the semis of the region, maybe the final game.
#26
1. Lee 2. Estill 3.4. Powell Owlsley either or.
#27
With the kid from Georgia that transferred to Lee (Pittman) it should make them a solid pick in the district. I hear he's about 6'5 and is a dunking machine. They also recently had another transfer from one of the Bluegrass area schools. Add these two to a team that already has one of the best shooters and players in the region, 6'3 Aaron Charles, and 6'5 center Pelfrey, and all Lee needs will be some heady PG play and they could make it to the championship game in the 14th. And if they get that far, and with their size, anything can happen. Hazard will still be the favorite, but I don't think their coach will allow his kids to take the Bobcats very lightly.
#28
I like Lee Co. to win the 56th this year..I was thinking back to yesteryear about a player who played for Lee Co but never really got a chance to strut his stuff..he now attends Berea College and plays every now and then in their gym. I got the priviledge of watching him scrimmage against the Berea team and I've never saw a better player in my life. He had to hit at least 12 3's in a row in one streak. Defense like a madman...mid-range jumper..most def. being made no matter who defends it..jumps out of the gym I must say..Ben Thomas was his name...and ballin is his game..
#29
I like Lee Co. to come out on top in the 56th as well. I like Aaron Charles and I look for him to have a big year. I also think the'll go deep into the regional tourney to. Possible the finals.
#30
Powell vs. Lee= Powell W 87-65
Owsley vs. Estill= Estill W 96-74
Final Powell vs. Estill= Powell W 72-67:champ:
