Betsy Layne 56 - Prestonsburg 54 - 58th District Tournament
#1
Final from Allen Central...

I'll fast forward to around 10 seconds left... Prestonsburg is down by 3, Blackcat senior Hannah Fitzpatrick takes the 3 and hits it with around 4 or 5 seconds remaining to tie it up and as the Betsy Layne player runs it up-court she BARELY runs into a Blackcat defender and the referee called one of the most bogus fouls I've ever seen with 0.1 left on the clock. The girl misses the two free throws, Blackcat coach Jack Pack picks up a technical (Coach Pack done the right thing!) and the girl hits 1 of 2 free throws and the Lady Bobcats win.

Not trying to take anything away from the Lady Bobcats but that game should have went to overtime... Congrats Bobcats!

Congrats too the Lady Blackcats also even though they've had some tough breaks this season with injury, they've overcome a lot even though there record may not show it... Thank you seniors for 4+ great seasons as Lady Blackcats....

Rikki Hughes, Julianne Frye, Hannah Fitzpatrick, Alisha Mayfield, and Brittany Collins.

Great game by both teams. This was a great one to watch. The Ladycats got absoultely jipped out of this one because of the worst call ive ever seen in a high school ball game.
#3
Horrible call at the end. The ref just took it right out of the girls hands. That was the only bad call all game probably, but that call was unbelievable.
#4
Yeah i dont understand how you can call a foul when the girl is just standing there with 0.1 seconds on the clock waiting on it to go off. Easily the worst call i have ever witnessed at a basketball game of any level. Pburg got screwed and thats all there is to it.

Congrats Besty Layne.

Great game! I agree that the call at the end of the game, with 0.1 secs, was absolutely ridiculous. One the worst I've seen in a while, but Jackie Pack cost Prestonsburg the game IMO!!!! He got the "T" with 0.1 secs left immediately after the foul was called. BL hadn't even shot the free throws yet. At that point the only way his team could win the game was if BL missed both free throws (and they did) and the game went into overtime. BL didn't seal the win until they hit one of the technical free throws. Don't get me wrong the "T" was very justified, but Pack had plenty of time to get it after BL hit one of the free throws from the foul call ---- again, they missed both. That way the game would have already been over and he could have said what he wanted without any plenalty to his team. IMO, he lost it in the moment and cost his team the game. JMO

If he doesn't get the "T" the game goes to OT & P-burg has a chance to win

I am confused on the score, if the score was tied at .1 sec. and BL hit one of the FTs how did BL win by 2?

Good question too be honest I don't remember. She may have gotten another free throw on the technical free throws... I was busy yelling at the referees.

I understand......This has to be devastating for the senior girls.....losing on a bogus call and a T-foul. I would bet coach Pack is not feeling to well either.

Yeah, I felt so bad for senior guard Rikki Hughes who committed the foul.

I bet she was upset because I know she is pretty emotional. I was not there and I did not see the call but if the score was tied at that point then the ref should have let the girls decide it in overtime. I have to say it took guts to make that call and it sure took guts to call the T. That was basically handing the game over to BL!!!

I'll agree, that it took guts to make the first call. But no guts are required to blow the whistle and call the T, if its deserving. And Coach Pack was deserving, but justified don't get me wrong. But still any ref would have called the T, just not many if any that I know of would've blowed the whistle on a questionable call with under a second to go in the game.

I think the call was very questionable but it was made. I have always heard and of course this comes from referees that they don't look at the clock so they don't know the fouls, score or time. I find this hard to believe, however some will tell us that. I watched the game there and also the replay and the player was ten ft. from reaching half court when the little bump took place. Looking back and putting myself in the refs spot a foul is a foul no matter how much time on the clock. It was a terrible time for this to happen and certainly ended the season of a team that has been working for 6 months just to end up looking at the clock with .1 seconds left and four feethrows awaiting the other team. Six months of all the running and preparation and it comes down to .1 seconds on a tough call. Coach Pack may feel as if he could have waited for a better time to verbally get after the ref that made the call or he may also regret not getting thrown out of the gym when it took place. I think on this one it may be an escort out of the gym. The referee that called the foul is a good ref and he called a foul that 95% probably do not at this time in the game. Do these guys really never look at the clock? Great game to watch and congratulations to both schools, I just wish that there could have been a three from the outside to win it and not a controversial call.

Sounds like a great game. Congrats Betsy Layne.

The girl made both technical free throws to put BL up by 2.

go ladycats, thats a shame the game ended that way.

Congrats Betsy Layne. Extremely tough break for P-Burg. I agree, I believe that the game should have went into OT, and let the girls fight it out for the win.

I don't know how many times you have seen him ref but he is one of the worst refs in the region and first of all I didn't care who won and I am definitely not a Prestonsburg fan but there is no way that call should have been made the Betsy Layne girl wasn't even trying that hard to get it up the court and not looking for a shot they were just willing to go to overtime. The refs are told unless it is an obvious foul they are not suppose to make that call. They are not suppose to figure into the out come but in the 15th region they find a way.
But it was a great game to watch anyway and how about the fans going after the ref and even pushed him and nothing was done to the Prestonsburg fan.

I just do not think in that situation that you should call a foul. IMO you should let the call go and send it into overtime instead of letting it end like that. This reminds me of the G'Town vs Nova game and the Tenn vs Rutgers game two calls that should not have been called were b/c of refs getting whistle happy.

Wow, pretty bold statement against someone that has been selected to work the girl's sweet 16 this year.
And in your theory of what officials are instructed, what is an "obvious" foul?
By the way, great post Wyatt. As you said, it was made, jus so happened to be at a very crucial time of the game. It was what he saw, when he saw it, no matter the time remaining. Woulda made the same call in the 1st Qtr or the 4th.

I heard about this game from someone with no ties to either team. A man from West Virginia who is just here for work. He said it was the worst call he has ever seen in basketball. I dont know though, I wasnt there.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It is the size of the fight in the dog.

Ref's are just like players, sometimes they make mistakes at crucial times. He could have called the NBA finals for the last 10 years , but that doesn't mean he won't miss a call hear and there. I think most unbiased people that saw the play would tell you it was a bad call. Not saying he is a bad ref. Actually I think he is a decent official, probably one of the top 4 or 5 in the region, but he missed this one. Also, I don't think anyone can honestly say the last few seconds of the game are called the same way as the 1st quarter. I agree that it probably should be, but in reality its not! Players should decide the game & not refs. JMO

Call should have never been made. totally disagree with Wyatt Earp statement about officials not looking at the clock, Yeah right !!!

What could have the girl from Betsy Layne done with the ball with the amount of time on the clock?

The whistle was blown with the ball being more than 60 feet from the bucket.

You've got to be kidding......he is calling the girls sweet sixteen? That should be a riot.

Listen, this referee is one of the best referees in this region. He was selected to call the girls state tournament because he is deserving of the accomplishment. Having said that, I know this official personally and I know that if you asked him about the call, he would be the first to tell you that he made a terrible call and would change it if he could. I know this is of no consolation to the ladies of Prestonsburg, but they did a great job and should have been able to decide this game in OT!
